Finally saw Godfather part II. WOW.

It's true what they say--part II is even better than the [great] original.

Best scene in cinematic history IMO:

From part I, my favourite scene is with Don Vito and Michael--when Don Vito says he didn't want Michael to be part of it; when they are in the garden together.

What was so great about the lake scene? Curious what interests you about it. He knew it was coming, no? Or just how it was executed? e.g. the kid isn't allowed at the very last minute, the hail mary...

I think the comparison is what makes it look especially bad. The first two were top notch. :beer:

or perhaps its the fact that he orchestrated the murder of his last surviving brother. thats pretty intense in my opinion to have a sibling wiped out like that. but it just shows the character of michael and whats truly important to him: the family business. i mean sure fredo gave roth and ola inside information on him, but he repented and begged for his brother's forgivness and even michael acknowledged him as weak. so instead of perhaps sending fredo away or keeping him quarantined, he decided to just eliminate what he perceives is a weak link in the chain of him running the family business.

Exactly. That was one of the most powerful moments of the film. Connie had begged Michael not to kill Fredo. Then Fredo begs for forgiveness (which Michael grants) and he hugs Michael. While they are hugging, Michael give his henchman a solitary "look" and the audience knows from that point that Fredo is a dead man.

Then after Fredo is killed, IIRC, they then go back to a scene with the whole family gathering around the table for Vito's birthday and it's when Michael first announces that he's going into the military.

Such a great movie. GOOD STUFF!!
