Finally, proper HDMI audio

With any luck, Nvidia will soon follow suit. Obviously there have been solutions before, but none of them were going to get full software support until one of the big guns stepped in.

Between this, WHS-WMC integration in Windows 7, and the "CableCards are now open" news, I'm thinking my TiVo HD might get replaced with an HTPC running WMC someday.

Nicely played, Microsoft.

Finally...

Hopefully they can get this implemented on an AMD motherboard chipset soon as well. Would be very nice for HTPC builders.

Equipping the top of the line gamer card with a home theater feature isn't all that exciting. Kinda lame really. Hopefully we'll see this trickle down to the low-end (fanless, $50 or less) stuff in reasonable time.

No, the 4xxx series can do PCM out but not bitstream HD audio.

I think Auzentech had the only card that could bitstream until now, and those things are freaking expensive.

For those not "in the know" on this.

The 4xxx series ATI cards will take DTS Master and/or True HD audio which is 192kHz/24 bit lossless compression and downsample it to 16 bit/48kHz PCM, which is also lossless but obviously reduced in terms of sampling rate and resolution (bits).

The 5xxx cards will actually send out the HD stream from the above mentioned codecs to the HDMI receiver capable of decoding it.

Is there a big difference in sound quality? That depends on your ears, your gear, your room, and the source audio in question. When it's all there I hear the higher resolution/sampling audio sounding more open, wider, in general better.

Yes, it is a Holy Grail of audio for HTPC's. One hurdle down.

Now if we can get some solid tuners with Cable Cards that work we'll be set...

Would you believe... Intel?
