Finally made the switch

Hi all

I now have a working version of Ubuntu Breezy on my desktop. Getting Ndiswrapper to work was a bit of a pain, having to boot back and forth between windows and linux, but now that it's up I am officially in love.

2 high points: multiple workspaces and apt-get. I'm diggin' it. The Terminal takes a bit to get used to, but the trip moves quickly. As soon as I figured out the tab button, I stopped swearing at it and started to like it.

I may have broken things already, I carelessly enabled backports for the updater and it now seems to have stalled installing a new linux-image, but I'm not too concerned. Even if I have to start over, this thing is worth it.

Welcome to the world of linux! I like your attitude about not caring if you have to start over because it's worth it. I heartily agree. Learning linux has been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences (I know others will disagree) that I've had in working with computers. Enjoy!

congratulations, you have reached ascension! lol

i envy you, i am a slave to dual boot/m$ for school.

whats your favorite linux app?

Don't stop there. Feel free to tweak away and expriment. 😀

I've learmed so much about Linux since I started using it two or three years ago. I love it. Most of my knowledge about it comes from taking the plunge and installing Gentoo, which is, in my opinion, the best and most versatile distribution.

I've been a fan of Firefox, Gaim and OpenOffice in windows for awhile now, so they're in there. I'm really liking the calendar function in Evolution.

I still havn't settled on a media player yet. I haven't yet gotten Mplayer's fullscreen mode to work yet, but I prefer the interface to xine.

I just started playing with Ktorrent, not sure if I prefer it over Azureus or not.

I like both Nautilus and Konqueror, probably end up running both.

I'm all over Gnome like a fat kid on a smartie. It's the little things, like having a dictionary bar in the panel. And I love the workspaces.

Good call, because if you mean to experiment, you will blow a couple of installations to he||. 🙂

And I think that's the first time I've read the word "hegemony" online, and applied to a technology subject at that! Good work! 😛

I'll take it then that somebody's already asked you about why you're using ndiswrapper. Did you try the native drivers for the card? That chipset's supposed to work pretty well natively.

Yeah, that was part of the headache. Turns out V.1 of that card works with the drivers, V.2 doesn't. My card was being picked up as a V.1, but I stumbled across a french forum where someone else was having the same headache I was. The numeric ID from lspci -n is from the V.2 card.

Since both the french guy and I bought the Canadian versions of the card (that has it's own part #) that may be part of the confusion. The bloody thing even looks like the V.1 on the outside. (SMC2802W)

Then Ndiswrapper didn't work, of course because the Prism54 drivers were in the way. It's funny how something as simple as uninstalling a driver is a learning proccess when you use a new OS.

I was just about to give up and buy a router that can be used as a bridge (partly as an excuse to buy a new toy) when I decided to try one more time from step 1-x. It worked like magic this time. When I saw google, I almost cried.

ATI keeps me chained to windows, stupid t550pro chip, so nice, but now im soo locked into Windows.....
other then that I was impressed by the new ATI linux drivers that I tried....

but still, for real, there has to be profit in it for them to produce a linux driver for it,
I am sure someone would love to use to use their ICs in their mass produced tv terminal running embedded linux 🙂

Having more than one piece of software control the same hardware is usually a problem. 🙂

If the driver is a module (and most hardware drivers are, especially when pre-packaged), it's actually rather easy to remove in a large majority of instances, both from disk and from memory.

Anyway, in case you haven't figured it out, it's a good idea from now on to thoroughly research potential hardware purchases, for hardware support is rife with political and economic pitfalls and usually undue complexity; this is a price paid for separation from the majority.

What's wrong with Mplayer fullscreen?

Edit:
If the fullscreen doesn't zoom the video to >100%, enable DRI in Xorg.conf.

I don't think Xv is implemented in terms of DRI (but I could be wrong).

If you have to use the vesa driver, add "zoom=yes" to ~/.mplayer/config for software scaling.
