Play of the day! Selfless young fan returns ball to upset boy

There's hope for America's future yet!

In one of the most heartwarming scenes you'll ever see, a young Arizona Diamondbacks fan named Ian made Wednesday's play of the day at Chase Field after an even younger fan named Nicholas missed a ball thrown his way by Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks(notes).

Though the dropped ball was instead handed to Ian by another person, he immediately recognized what he had to do after seeing Nicholas in a distraught state after botching an attempt at a souvenir. With an amazed audience looking on, Ian marched back down the stairs and graciously handed the baseball over to Nicholas, a Brewers fan, without any prodding from anyone else.

As Deadspin notes, "if this doesn't warm your heart, you're awful."

This season we have learned that you should never lean over the railing to catch a ball, and if you try catching it and can't, start pouting and someone will hand you it.

"As with Wednesday's post about the pouty Giants fan, I suspect there will be a lot of misguided people taking aim at the younger fan and his immediate sulking after missing out on the ball. That sort of criticism is ridiculous, of course, because you can hardly expect a child of that age to have control of his emotions or any perspective beyond that exciting — and ultimately, disappointing —moment."

I felt the same way, and thought the little kid who was visibly disappointed at not getting the ball was just a spoiled brat. Remember though, he is a little kid, and he didn't throw a tantrum or anything, just got visibly upset.

What needs to be to dwelt on in this is the selfless by the other kid. Even most ADULTS wouldn't have returned the ball to the little kid.
His parents should be proud. I know I appreciated seeing that act of kindness.

Its not like there was a person there probably yelling at him to give it to the other kid, right?

Tell me I'm not the only one who saw that.

It does look like he was was told something moments before he handed it to the other kid. What he was told is irrelevant though... because he didn't seemed to have whined, complained or argue that it was his. He simply walked over and gave it to him.

If you all watch the video, Ian clearly states he did it because it was the right thing to do. Even if someone told him to give the other kid the ball, at least Ian knew the reason why he should have done it and didn't complain. I would hands down reward someone like that 110% of the time.

wow.... hard for people to see good in anything here. pick it apart and trash it any way you can.

little kid is probably a future serial killer and now knows he can get his way by looking sad. Dozens of college-age women, left naked and dead with nothing but their pantyhose wrapped around their necks, thank the older kid for his act of kindness.

Srsly, nice news is few and far between - we really don't need to dissect the motivations here.

Agreed.

Obvious con job is obvious. Anyone can see they're in it together. And it looks like their grifting worked.

The ball was thrown to the little kid in the brewer hat by the brewer player but the big kid is the one who knocked it out the way. If the bigger kid had not tried to reach over those people the little kid would have got the ball.

what a good kid. he handed it over without a second thought and enjoyed the game. good things come to those that do good.
