Thanks to your valuable advise and with a lot of money -for me🙂 I finally- built my pc. Here's what it has

AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz AXIA with 266FSB
Asus A7V133 rev1.05
Crucial PC133 Cas2 256MB X 2
Hercules 3D Prophet 2 Pro 64MB with GF2 Pro
Creative SoundBlaster Platinum 5.1 with Live Drive IR
IBM 60GXP 40GB HD
Asus 50X CD-ROM
Plextor 16/10/40A burner
Floppy 🙂

I already had:

Creative PC-DVD Drive 6X
TV Radio Live PCI Card
Micronet NIC
3COM Us Robotics 56K EXT
HP Deskjet 970Cxi
Eizo L36o LCD Monitor

All of these work, I mean they are not bad (at least for now).

I installed W2K with no problems. Afterwards I installed with the following order.

Via 4in 1's version 4.29
Detonator 3 version 6.50
DirectX 8.0
The rest of the drivers


I also installed various apps (Office, 3D Studio, and smaller ones like ICQ) as I was downloading 3D Mark 2001. And here comes my problem...
The 3d performance of my system sucks. I mean although 3D studio runs fine, 3D Mark and Unreal Tournament give me terrible performace. The frame rate is too low (5-15 fps on both) and 3D MArk only gives me 845 Marks. I tried those -W2K- AGP, Athlon Pathes but they only made things worse. The result: 3D MArk crashed all the time 🙁 The same with detonatoe 6.30.

I formatted again (I know what you are thinking ...) and this time I have ONLY installed these things with this order

Detonator 3 version 6.50
DirectX 8.0
3D Mark 2001

I run it with the same terrible performance (8XX Marks)

I then installed
Via 4in 1's version 4.29

This time 3D Mark refuzed to run anything with the excuse that a file Q_Tank.dds was corrupted.

I think I will suicide in about an hour. I saved money for 4 months , waited 1 week for all the components to arrive and I have become CRAZY 🙁

You are my last hope...

I agree vid card drivers after dx8.0...I do for my radeon if I want it to work properly...

Did you get everything installed (all those cards you have listed) before you tested 3d? I would put minimal things in test 3d then go one at a time from there...maybe you are having some conflicts with other devices...


Are those the best det drivers for win2k? I know they are in the 11's but that may be for win98...are det3's for win2k and det2's for win98?
 
Win2K Service Pack 1 absolutely kills video scores. My 3DMARK scores went to zero even though everything looked okay.
 
Just a thought. Make sure your not using Win9x detonators instead of Win2K! Was the 7.xx mean't for DirectX 8a? Can't remember.

First, update your video card drivers, The drivers your using are quite a bit behind the current drivers.

Test the system performance with only the essential hardware in at first to ensure that poor performance isnt being caused by a hardware conflict.

Install DX8 before video card drivers. Try the Via 4in1 4.30 drivers and install them before the video card drivers also.
As other have said, make sure you are using the Win2000 drivers and not the NT4 or 9X drivers mistakenly.

Check through your BIOS to make sure nothing is set oddly in there.

Ensure DMA is enabled for your HDD.

When you've done all of that then come back and I'm sure we will have more suggestions for you 🙂
 
Fast writes and installation of detonator after directx8.0 did nothing Anyway it was a nice thought.

Yes the detonator are for the W2K and this time (after the format) I haven't installed anything except for the things I described.

Oh, I forgot to tell that my 3D Marks came without the nature game and the pixel fill(or smth like that). It said that my system didn't support them. It's like I don't have DX8 (I know that these two things are heavily DX8 dependant) but I definately have it.

Now I will download the rest of the detonator 7,11,12 etc series and see if I have any luck with them... Maybe it's what Shagga says but he is unsure (Det 6.50 don't support DX8)

 
Rand : I didn't enable DMA because I thought it had nothing to do with it. I'll enable it.

As for the minimum components do you mean not installing their drivers as I did after the format, or not putting them completely on the case?
 
well I believe there are supposed to be test that the geforce2 and the Radeon can't do...only the GF3 is truly fully dx8.0 enabled.

definitely check to make sure drivers are correct...something seems strange about it.

Radeon 98x/me driver numbers are no where near similar in numbers to the win2k...
 
I enabled DMA, reinstalled 3D Mark and now it runs without this error about the Q_Tank...
But with the same 3D Marks . Oh...wait they are 852 not 845 🙁

The other test that it can't run is the Enviromental Bump Mapping. Is this ok? Isn't this a DX7 old feature? Why not run it?

Oh... another question is the thing about installing and uninstalling drivers. How many times can I do it. If I install many directx versions, 4 in 1's , det etc won't those mess my system. Should I format all the time?

 
What PCI cards are installed in what PCI slots? (PCI 1 is closest to AGP, PCI 5 is at the end of the board)

Also in the BIOS there is an option called System Performance make sure thats set to Optimal. And also if you have PC133 Cas2 or better memory choose 7ns (PC143) option for the memory. Also I find 7.52 are the best Win2K drivers overall... 10.xx and 11.xx get better 3Dmark scores... but worse scores in REAL games.
 
no the enviro bump mapping is not supposed to work on GF2 cards...didn't on 3dmark2000 either...

Also you don't need to format everytime if you follow proper install methods...that said many have problems and since you are at the beginning or close to reformat would be easier and safer...
 
I know you already updated ur drivers but I must say my system is quite similars to yours and I gained 600 points in 3d mark 2001, going from detonator 6.5 to detonator 1X.XX.

When I build my PC, heres what I've done after building it up:
-Set mobo to jumperfree
-Set AGP to AGP 4X
-Set Fastwrites ON

-Then I installed win98se (I wanted 2k.. but I have my reason for installing win98se.. 🙂 ).
-Installed direct 8.0
-Installed Detonator 10.80
-Installed via 4-in-1 4.29
(note : I know it isnt a good thing to install 4-in-1 last.. but that's what I've done tough .. 😛)
-Installed 3d mark 2001 and benched 3000+

Anyway.. I can see you tried a lots of things.. what I suspect now is that there might be some disfunctional hardware component.
I first tough of the Hard Drive, cuz u said u had a corrupted file or something.. and maybe It can have broken some DirectX, Via or Detonators files.

Then I tough it could be the videocard...
Or even the mobo.. who knows..

Anyway, this is all the help I can provide, make sure your cpu heat is normal too...

I downloaded via4.30 and it was no better.

I downloaded det 7.58 and the miracle happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I now have very good fps (High Detail I can get almost 100, low constant 23+)
My 3D Mark score :3245. I know this is not much but I'll optimize it... I will try the det 10, 11,12 also

So let's summarize what will I do after I reformat (I want to have a clean system. That's the last time - I promise 🙂

Install via 4.29 or 4.30
Install DX8
Install Detonator 7.58 or later 🙂
Install other drivers and progz

Any more suggestions?

But if you have the time.. you should bench ur comp with each of the drivers in 3dmark2001 and 3dmark2000..... and maybe some other benchmark progs

Why? To find the most optimal driver for your comp

Why 3dmark2001 and 3dmark2000 ?.. cuz (correct me if im wrong) 3dmark2001 uses DirectX 8.0.. and since not many games use it... 3dmark2000 will show u performances with DirectX 7.0...

I donno if Black and White uses DX7 or DX8.. 😛

Well.. could take a lot of time but.. you could know the real best drivers for your system... and dont forget to take note of each test.. so you can compare with future releases of drivers and with other peeps ... 😛
 
Feel free to use 3DMark to compare drivers but it wont help much. The 10.xx and 11.xx are optimized for 3DMark 2k1... but in ANY games 7.52 or 7.58 are as fast or faster in any game and they are extremelly stable.
 
Dont know if this has been said before but my hard drive was realy slow before I installed the promise controller drivers(my hd is on the controller)
