Finally grew a pair and BIOS modded my 5850 - update with Vantage scores.

Thought I would post this here for general reference since it could have helped me out a lot. I was having all sorts of trouble overclocking my HIS HD 5850 through software - clocks kept resetting, would not clock correctly on restart, and worst of all no power saving features. CCC limits you to 775/1125 on the 5850's which is way less than these cards can do. So I finally broke down and flashed it with the MSI Unlock BIOS. AWESOME! CCC now gives me a max of 1550/2250 to play with. As we speak I am running 940/1300 @ 1.15v. This thing can spank any stock 5870 and I get to keep power saving features. Easiest overclocking mod ever. Highly recommended.

Guide: http://forums.pureoverclock.com/showthread.php?t=6924

3D Mark06:
Default 725/1100 - 22438
Overclk 940/1300 - 24196

Vantage:
725/1000: total 14845, GPU 13971, CPU 18274
940/1300: total 17847, GPU 17659, CPU 18438

can you do some game benches to see the performance difference between stock and overclock?

That is impressive, how are your temps? Have you benchmarked the Ocd card yet? Any visual issues?

tvdang - Sry, just built the system - first desktop I have had in 3 years. I have no recent games to benchmark....but they will be coming, oh yes they will. I can do 3DMark06. You can find those benches everywhere, though. Just google "5850 overclocking".

Apoc23 - Using stock cooler temps are peaking at low 70's running Furmark with fan about 45%. No visual issues running Unigine Heaven bench or Furmark so far.

Sweet, nice work man. 30% OC on core, 30% OC on memory, 6% OC on core voltage. Hard to beat that.

a 30% speed increase on the core could only get a measley 7.6% increase in 3dmark test??? That's a losing return. I'd be curious to see if actual game performance is more than 7.6%. If not, then I would not bother overclocking.

So you took the plunge, eh? Cool. Takes a bit of fortitude, but now your 5850 may fly as high as it can. And it won't waste juice when you don't need it to.

I'd also be curious to see Vantage GPU scores, stock compared to OC.

Be careful with the VDDC slave (VRM) temps. 5850 doesn't have alot of power circuitry, so keep an eye on them and don't overdo it.

CPU also plays a role in the score.
He didn't compare scores with/out CPU OC.

Yah, not sure about that. 3d Mark06 may not be representative. If you google the overclocking benchmarks in games it was much more impressive at lower clocks.

Can you post your HDR/SM3.0 score from 3DMark06? That score should be a much better measure of the graphics-horsepower increase than the overall score.

Edit: And congrats on the oc!

Nice overclocks. Damn. I was impressed when I hit 800 core on my 4850 (up from 625).

Keep in mind that the 5xxx series enables the error correction on Gddr 5 memory, which can actually hurt performance past a certain point.

Try out your results with OC core/Stock mem, Stock Core/ OC mem and so on to make sure you're not OCing with no return.

Nice, that's a great overclock for a 5850, I was thinking it would beat the stock 5870 by a big sum, but the GPU vantage scores don't seem to say so, It's more or less on the lines of a stock 5870 with that GPU score on OC minus the hardware difference between the 5850/5870 (1440vs1600 stream procs/72vs80 texture units/memory bandwidth 128vs153.6GB/s and some other minor differences).

Thanks for the benches!
