After about a month of planning and waiting for parts (Tbird 1.4) my new machine is finally up and running and I love it!

Much more than the last machine I built, probably because I have gone different ways with the new one.

The old machine:

Tbird 800
368Mb 133 Crucial
Asus A7V
Creative Geforce DDR
SBLive value
Creative 4.1
Sony E400
WinME

The new Machine:

Whats changed:

The most noticible, nVidia->ATi WOW what a difference, it really brings out the best in my monitor, which I paid alot of money for and was being totally wasted on the geforce. Colours are vibrant, text is sharp as hell.

SBLive->Santa Cruz, I can't really comment on the Cruz as I don't really use it as it only feeds a digital stream to my receiver which does all the conversion. But using my main system for sound instead of a little sub/sat combo is a great idea. Cos the HD is so big I have just ripped my best albums (Chronic, Doggystyle, Straight outta Compton) as .WAV's to the disk and play them from the disk, because it stays digital all the way to the amp it doesn't lose any quality, sounds great.

Globalwin->Taisol MUCH easier to fit

ASUS->Gigabyte I have had nothing but grief with that Asus board, I have had about 4 in total, first 2 didn't work atall. The gigabyte runs perfectly and was a breeze to setup.

Win 9x->Win 2k Win Me was a nightmare, crashed alot and was full of useless crap. Win2k has been great.

Thanks for listening, peace.

Nice rig! I think that the Santa Cruz is the best all around card for W2K. I went from an X-gamer to the SC and couldn't believe the difference.

Oh and going from a Creative 52x CD-ROM to the Pioneer DVD-106s was a great improvement in ters of DAE speed and noise levels, I don't know why people say the pionner slot is noisy.

<< Most of us know the radeon has better 2d then the nvidia based cards out there. >>

thats why I am having a hard time letting go of my Radeon LE for a GeForce 3...

Very nice rig you got there.

I totally agree with you on the clarity of the Radeon.

I went from a Nvidia GeForce 256 to an ATI Radeon 64MB and I literally was stunned at how much clear/crisper/more vibrant the text and colors were.

I'm not bashing the GeForces, I'm agreeing that the 2D quality of the Radeon is top notch.

I agree with most of what you said. I went from a GeForce 256DDR to an ATI Radeon 64MB and the difference is HUGE. I also agree that Asus boards are nothing but problems. I have owned 2 and they were the worst boards I have used. I don't agree about 9x vs 2K. 2K was nothing but problems for me. In two instances Win 2K (Advanced Server) literally rendered my computer inoperable!!! I could not get it to boot at all for hours. I had no idea software could be so damaging. That would make a really bad virus. :)
