Finally got my car "legal"... 2 years later.

Yup. Today I finally went down to the DMV and registered my car here in Alabama. I still had my Florida plates on my car which had expired 12/07, now two states removed (I had moved back to NY in '07, then to AL in '08 having never registered my car in NY).

Yes, I've had insurance the whole time, yes I'm aware that my insurance company likely wouldn't have covered an accident with expired tags - at least tags that old.

Now all I need to do is get my license changed over from FL to AL and I'll no longer be a Floridiot. Of course if you think that's bad, my wife still has her NY license from before we moved to Florida waaaaaay back in 2003.

You sound like my sister. I don't know why people avoid the DMV, could your car not pass inspections? Inspections in MO are a joke, they will stamp approve anything as long as your windsheild is clear and you have all your mirror. Oh, and smog test shoudl be a breeze unless your muffler fell off.

We don't even have inspections here in MI. Just need a title, insurance and cash. Well they will take CC if you pay a 3% fee.

Probably because the DMV is a giant pain in the ass.

I brought the car I'm using to Cali, and I need to get it registered there. Problem is, the owner is in Texas

Do you have to pay/claim personal property taxes to the state? It's hard toget by this in MO because of that, plus the cops pull you over no questions if you have a bad sticker.

It's state $$$ that they need heheh

Ha when we moved from michigan to alabama, my mom refused to give up her michigan license. She got several speeding tickets over a short duration and unbeknownst to her, got her michigan license revoked. It was about that time she decided to finally get her Alabama license, and she did. About 4 months later, she got a letter in the mail teller her that her michigan license had been revoked. it's been probably 12 years and it never caught up to her. 😛

What I'm about to do is purely for the lulz...
Wow, learn to spell! It's spelled TEXAS YOU MORON!, T-E-X-A-S! TEXAS!!! DURRR! 🙄D:

Alot of people in TEXAS fake their stickers. They have places all over the place where you can pay someone $15 to $20 to throw on a stolen/fabricated sticker. Doubt it's helpful when the cops run your plates but I'm sure it prevents them from pulling you over when tailgating you for a brief moment.

I've seen shady shops in NC with literally a STACK of inspection stickers, dealing them like a deck of cards for $10. But...NC inspection is pretty strict, especially in larger cities like raleigh. They've always tried to tell me my faded, 12 year old factory tint is too dark. 🙁

go have some coffee and come up with a better retort than throwing around a stereotype. have you lived in alabama? how many people do you know that live there? riiiigggghhhhht......

the OP lived in Florida a while, and has formed an opinion based on experience of many years of residence.

I moved to Louisiana and their idea of a vehicle inspection was do the wipers work, head light & high beams work, windshield look good... and it only cost $10 and perhaps about 15 minutes of your time.

I moved to Pennsylvania and they actually inspect your car along with an emissions test. I had to replace some balding tires and had parts of my front brakes system replaced ( can't recall ATM what was wrong). What irked me about the brakes, was that I just had them checked out 8 months (about 4,000 miles) prior and had the rear brakes worked on. I'm just annoyed that nothing was ever mentioned about the front brakes, but then again the place i went to that did the rear brake repairs was in Louisiana.

Luckily though, when I had my car being inspected, the mechanic saw that I was leaking oil. Fixed the leak by replacing some hoses. Only cost about 500 since the hoses were special ordered and for labor.

In my state we can renew the registration online with a credit card and they mail you tags and/or plates. Really no excuse not to.

That's how I've renewed for the past 4 or 5 years. It's awesome not having to go to the DMV.

Didn't you live in Binghamton not too long ago? What did you move for other than the dump of a town it is?

Actually it wasn't bad. There was only one person in the line in front of me, was about a 10 minute wait. Ended up being far cheaper than I was initially told too.

Ad Valorem and Property Tax on the car here as far as I can tell. Even so, it was only $53 and change.

As far as Floridiots go - I refer to the drivers, not people in general. Drivers in Florida suck, plain and simple (They just can't seem to grasp the concept that pedestrian's on a sidewalk != driving lane). More reply directed towards you after Colt45's quote...

Florida vs. Alabama.

That's a real battle of the minds, right there. 😉

... I live in the Huntville area. Ya know... Rocket City. There's more rocket scientists here than just about anywhere else. One of the largest tech research parks in the USA here as well. Now Birmingham on the other hand........

You can renew online here... but you have to go in to the DMV to transfer the title and register initially. They also "inspect" the car here at the DMV when you register it. Their "inspection" appears to consist of making sure the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the registration before they hand you your tag.

Ithaca. I moved for a 40% raise not including health insurance costing about $300 less/month, an advanced position (Senior Software Analyst), far more job opportunities should things have not worked out, a much better climate/weather, and finally... people that aren't assholes. Seems to be far more asshole per square mile in NY than just about anywhere else.

$500 to replace some hoses was a good deal?😱

if you'd like I would fill your windshield wiper fluid for a $100.😀

In some states they wanna see all your past registrations and if you cant produce them or produce enough of them, they will tax you for a new vehicle purchase before you can register. CA fucked me like that. I bought a car from a dude. He got it new, he registered and paid taxed in Ohio.
When the tags went out a month later, I went to CA dmv and tried to register. They screwed me over.

Yeah, well - CA would tax/fee you to death just for breathing. They're the exception, not the rule.

OMG, I know. I am currently in Ithaca. Bunch of pompous note it all pricks in this town.
