<< Heh, how cute, a Linux dabbler. Be a man and do a full install. Get a crappy notebook or something and have a standalone.

I like Debian, but the install is rough.
>>

Be a man and stop using those wannabe Linux ditro's. Get something like Slackware 8 or if you really wanna be bada$$ then get one of the BSD's going.

Mandrake is for wimps.

Login is for the username you entered when you installed (or root if you didnt create a user). If you didnt create a user make one asap. As far as the password goes, come on moron, you wont see your passwod there! It doesnt echo (anything) to the screen! Duh. Now please start reading a little bit and stop asking stupid questions for a little while.

And to all the pussies that think slack or Debian is that much better than Mandrake, STFU. thanks.

Different distros to accomodate different users. Slackware has always been for the hardcore linux hackers. Desbian a lot of people like too. Mandrake I find is best suited for the desktop. I like it. Now again, that's just my opinion, someone else might prefer a different distro for the desktop. It's all up to you. Yes, that is what we call freedom of choice.

Now you didn't have to be that rude to this new linux user. Some people need some guidance before they start learning on their own. I know I would never know as much as I do now about Linux if i hadn't asked other linux users so many questions. And yes, I did do a lot of research on my own too. I know, RTFM (Read The Fine Manual).

As to answer your question bjc112, once you get to that point, please type in "startx". This will get you into the X-Windows environment.

However, if you start in the console when you boot up linux and your just starting to use it. Might I recommend that you change that so that you get a graphical login? That way you'll get into X=Windows right away.

i wish i had the time to install linux and try it. apparently VMWare doesn't work very well for me. i got red hat 7.2 installed but it just hangs on it with a blinking "_" for an enternity.

typically, linux doesn't use "*******" for passwords, it jsut doesn't show anything at all. i.e. you type "password" and it shows "" (nothing), however, when you press enter, it still knows what you typed.

For a new linux user, I highly recommend you check out mandrake. And I don't use VMWare...I use Linux natively.
