Anyone remember a band called "The Monroes"? (the american band, not the lame swedish one) Well, they had a song in 1982 called "What do all the people know?" and it was a really popular song and was actually pretty damn awesome, for the 80s anyway. Anyway, I recorded it on my ghetto blaster back in 1982 and when the song/group was about to peak their record label dropped them and all copies of the record (only made it to radios stations) were recalled and/or forced to not play the song. I never got to purchase it back in 82 and in the early 90s a bootleg cd hit the circuit of record shops in NYC. It was a pretty bad copy but it was the only way to get this song.

So, growing up with this song from my teen years in the 80s and as a yougn adult in the 90s only having a bootleg cd copy and the short version of the song on some stupid 80s compilation disc and now as a middle-aged old fart of 46, I was bored last week and browsed ebay, were I randomly search for shit from my youth in the 70s and 80s and I put in a search for this LP and lo and behold someone was auctioning off the original vinyl. So, I put in a 5 buck bid and one! Hell, no one even bidded on this but me! So, My 80s dreams have come true and I have the record I have been searching on and off for the last 31 years! And, it looks and sounds as if it has never been played!

Awesome, just awesome. I actually felt bad about it only being 5 bucks in mint as those who know the song know its history.

Dont you just love stories like this? :)

You filthy pirate. You should be locked away, and fined $10k per song on that album.

That's pretty cool. Just imagine - if you had looked last month it might not have been there. If you hadn't looked until next month it might have been gone. The stars were aligned for you.

Did you see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLEa6CDT_0s where the lead singer commented offering an MP3? You ought to give him a shout-out.

I do too, but that doesn't sound too '80s to me (except the keyboard.) They sound like they were ahead of their time.
Exactly. Which is why, IMO, this could have been a defining song/group. They could have been the next Boston, who too got screwed by the record companies. Too bad the POS record label pulled out of the US market.

so im supposed to go find an original ugly kid joe lp now? :)

I agree though, op is taking food out of artists mouths by buying second hand like that. if you cant buy it in store properly, then you should just send $20 to RIAA for no reason.

Not only that, but I'm sure it's marked as "promotional use only". That's clearly a violation of the licensing terms, and the "content creator's" sovereign rights in perpetuity on everything they grace the world with.

No excuse for piracy. Copyright law is 95 years for corporations, and that's the best case. If the band retained copyright, it's life plus 70 years. You filthy pirate. You should be ashamed of yourself, and your feeble excuses just make you look bad. Why do you hate artists?

The copyright was probably sold as an asset of the company when they shut down.

Regardless, it's the owner's responsibility to enforce their own copyright, so it won't be a problem unless they contact you directly. :)

wtf are you guys talking about? Buying used records has never been illegal. lol @ the piracy-insecure.

Good job op. I started hitting up Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Savers for random CDs about a year ago, but although I've had some great finds, I go back to the internet for any feasible odds of finding something.
