Finally going to take the plunge - recommend a good cable modem...

I've had it with dial up. Besides, the wife and I each have cells and our regular phone cost plus my dial up service is more than cable would cost me. So you see where I'm at. So now its time to shop for a good basic cable modem. It doesn't have to have any of the fancy features like network router, wireless LAN, etc.. just basic cable modem. Newegg has a Toshiba on sale for $53 shipped. Anyone have any opinions?

Get a Motorola Surfboard. The Toshiba is a great modem but designed with tighter tolerances than the Moto. While this may look great in a lab, the reality is that Toshibas work exceptionally well as long as the cable plant is in near perfect working order. When it's not, the Toshiba will start dropping the connection. You should never see this if the cable company is doing their job but stuff happens The Motos will manage line noise better than any other that I can think of.

Bottom line.... you can't go wrong with the Surfboard.

the surfboard is 42 bucks at newegg.com 🙂

its a steal at that price and I agree there is no better cable modem period.

don't buy the toshiba, they tend to die after about a year and a half, it all depends. when mine died it didn't totally die, but my connection went to a crawl and it drove me nuts til i called my cable company. they told me its a know problem with them. it also happened to 2 friends. junk.

get the motorola

I didn't see that. At that ptice I ought to pick one up as a spare!

The Toshiba is actually a good modem. It's just real picky about the config file and the condition of the network. Motos just truck along.

yea,it was a great modem until it decided to stop working for no reason. i didn't touch or change anything, i just woke up one day and it was dead. got a surfboard at a local bestbuy, plugged it in, i was back up again.

Yep. All will go bad sooner or later. A few years ago Toshiba came out with several new models within a span of about 16 months, and each model naturally required something unique in the config or firmware. What worked fine in the 1100's caused timing offsets, failure to renew the IP and so on with the 1100U's, 2200's and others. The Motos are quite robust. I own a perfectly working Toshiba but purchased a new Surfboard just to avoid their finicky nature.

I totally agree! I also have the Motorola Surfboard and it has worked great for me for over 3 years now.

Surfboard is what my cable Internet provider distrubutes. You can only use their modems on their network, so there must be some reason why they used Surfboards. On a side note, they're uncappable. You'll get caught though, unless they don't monitor usage.

Usually not, the have you rent one or buy it for a ridiculous price if you get it from the cable company. ($99.99 or something similar).

It's usually a rental fee (nice blanket statement there 😉).

Find out what your provider would charge...and if they'll let you use your own modem, not all of them will. Of course having them rent you one will probably cost more in the long run, but if it goes bad, you get a new one from them.
