I've owned this game on PS2 for YEARS and I think I stopped playing it somewhere around the 8th colossus.

Picked it up on PSN+ on PS3 and it was sitting there taunting me. So I spent the last week playing it a couple at a time. It wasn't long until I remembered why I quit playing this game. It could be a glorious game if it wasn't for the very bad controls and camera. Ugh. I did suffer though though because I really do like the idea of the game and the massive bosses and finished it last night. It really surprises me there hasn't been another in the Ico-ish world since.

The game itself is not hard at all. It's just the very..cumbersome controls that make things more difficult than they need to be.

That being said, the game is still awe inspiring in it's vision and world and the "twist" at the end.

I have eye balled the Ico/Shadow Of Colossus every time I visit the store. Haven't grabbed it yet, probably will soon though.

If you've never played them, getting the free HD versions on PSN is the way to go. They are both great games and worth a play. I actually like Shadows better overall, but they really are only similar in spirit rather than gameplay. Guardians on a bigscreen/projector the the way to go.

Yeah the HD versions of these games were great, played them through on PS2 and again on PS3 when they came out. I wish I had a 3D TV to try out for shadows, it has potential to be really cool. I always felt like the cumbersome controls were intentional in the games, they were responsive but your character was just an ordinary person and kind of slow to do things. The camera I agree on could get messed up pretty badly on SoTC, not really a problem on ICO though.

I missed both Ico and SotC on PS2 for various reasons, so I picked up the HD remaster for ~$20 on Amazon a few months ago. I've since played through Ico three times and SotC two, which is quite unusual for me.

The games are both extremely good, even with control/camera "issues", and the HD remaster is very well done.

If you haven't played them, you should. There is a reason both are referred to as works of art.

Edit: Also, don't spoil either game for yourself (but especially Ico). Stay away from walkthroughs. Besides, you really shouldn't need one.

SotC is one of my favorite games. Ico I feel is a bit too elementary, but it is nice in its simplicity.

The simplicity is the key.

It tells an emotional story in the most minimal way possible, and does it very well.

Yeah I definitely agree with that, I used a guide for a couple puzzles in ICO and I regret it. It doesn't help that the HD remaster had a different puzzle in it than the US version, so when I got to that part in the remake I was remembering the way it was originally solved and drove myself crazy trying to figure it out.

I agree with you on the story from, especially with characterization and lack of backstory. However, I feel the simplicity of the gameplay detracts from Ico as a game.

I agree with that, but I tend to look at Ico as something different (more?) than a game.
