I've been writing a functional spec for a project at work for like a month now. Zero guidance from anybody with any knowledge on the project really, and I've never done one before. I've helped on a lot of projects the last few years, been the technical expert mostly, said I wanted to learn to do more.

I turned my last draft in three weeks ago effective today. I didn't get feedback on it until almost 2 weeks after that, the day before the next draft was due to the client. The PM ended up pushing that deadline back until this Tuesday, then promptly took off for a week. I was also told by my boss NOT to do it during my regular work hours, as we're short-staffed, and they'd just pay me overtime to do it at home. Not what I was really hoping for, but OT is OT.

What's really sad is the two developers working on the project have said that so far it's the most detailed and organized spec they've seen, and without a tech spec to go off they would be able to do the project anyways. Great news for me, not so much for the people doing this crap prior to me.

People who do this for a living: This is seriously a pain in the ass when there's nobody providing any input. Is this really something I want to keep pushing to get into?
