Finally an Intel stock cooler that doesn't suck since S478?

"Hey look mum, no more flimsy push pins!"

...When it comes with a >$999 Intel CPU. Yeah.

If AMD can get HSF mounting perfectly right since S754 six years ago til today I don't see why Intel can't do the same. AMD's mounting is infinitely more reliable and easier to install than those stupid push pins. Heck, every single AMD board since K8 has a freaking backplate preinstalled to boot.

I doubt anyone buying the Extreme Edition of chips will be using the stock cooler. I'm sure they have something of their own.

Holy crap that thing's actually a STOCK Intel cooler? 😱

It looks like it might be for the 6 core Gulftown. A run-of-the-mill Core i7 965/975 will still have the round heatsink with push pins (albeit with copper base and thin fins).

It's probably just to cover their ass for the non-tech savvy (although wealthy) that buy these chips and use their motherboard's supplied software overclocking option to ramp up the speed. On a stock cooler, it would probably overheat within seconds and they'd be getting tons of unnecessary complaints.

Anyone that spends $999 on a processor and works with computers regularly is going to buy a Megahalem / TRUE / Venemous-X / H50, or have a custom water cooling or phase change setup.

Regardless, I wish Intel would supply these (or even a cut-down version) with all of their "enthusiast" processors - i5 750, i7 860, i7 920, etc., for cheap. Their Pentiums, i3s, and lower-end i5s can stick with the low profile cooler.

For example, the heatsink that AMD supplied with s939 X2s (possibly single cores too?) was pretty awesome.
