yep, samsung will finally be forced to accept FRAND level royalties

You do realize this was for slide to unlock only?

Mannheim state court spokesman Joachim Bock said judges dismissed both cases involving alleged patent infringements of the companies' respective slide-to-lock technology on mobile devices.

Article doesn't say anything about the 3G patents, only the BS slide to unlock patents. Good start though, now fine Apple a couple dozen Billion as an example to other companies not to be ass clowns.

Mannheim state court spokesman Joachim Bock said judges dismissed both cases involving alleged patent infringements of the companies' respective slide-to-lock technology on mobile devices.

Samsung Electronics welcomed Friday's dismissal of Apple's case against the firm, but vowed to appeal the dismissal of its lawsuit against Apple. It also said a separate case regarding four alleged patent infringements is still pending with the Mannheim court.
Apple Germany was not immediately reachable for comment.

Samsung and Apple Inc. are engaged in a strategic war over patents in many countries.

If I am counting right, so far Apple had to drop an actual feature, push email. Android vendors had to change their implementations of some features, but didn't have to drop any, unless I missed something. Samsung has had to figure out how to put speakers where they belong in the first place, the front of a tablet. That's about the only positive thing I've seen come out of this whole patent mess.

i have a theory that all these patent lawsuits are just cover to get them recognized as being legit. no patent is really legit until it has survived a lawsuit

Correct. Keep in mind that if Apple wins the "push email" appeal, Motorola will lose $100 million Euros which has already been posted as bond for this injunction to be enforced. There is a chance, don't know how good, that the Moto patents may be invalidated.

Also keep in mind that Apple's "big gun" patents are still awaiting trial. I forget the exact patents but Apple's non design related patents seem to be on the backend of the iOS vs Android patent wars. Some of them might be ruled invalid though so until things finalize, which probably won't be for years, no one will know who will ultimately win. As it currently stands, Moto seems to be winning the patent wars while HTC and Samsung has been losing. Apple has some ups, some downs.

In the end, I think Apple's patent wars is not about killing Android. Rather, it's about enforcing enough design and tech patents that it degrades the Android experience enough that Apple can reasonably say they have the "best" mobile OS from an ease of use standpoint.
