First, I'm currently at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Next,
Think of ceramics like this; look around you, is what you see organic? or metallic? If not, then it is almost definately something I get to play with.(although I did get a MS in MatSci (Iowa State) and BA's in physics and chemistry (Coe College) before this)
Let's see, I am now 29. Almost exactly 11 years from my high school graduation to finish the works. I know a lot of people who do this in 2-4 years less, but I stopped along the way for a masters in a different field. I set a goal for myself of getting a PhD when I was a little kid, and I was going to do it.(of course, that was to be an astronaught!)
Yes the loans are going to suck, I however, have been getting paid to go to school for the last 7 years. Over 90% of the loans I have are for the first 4 years of college I went to.
And finally, I'm looking for a job, but haven't had any luck yet. I've had several interviews, but have only gotten the "you are great, but we're hiring someone else" response. I've considered becoming a professor, but I think I need to get out of academia for a while first. At the moment it looks like I'll probably leach onto my advisor as a post-doc for a few months while I find something.
