Rules of Engagement

With the furtherance of SETI@HOME as our primary goal and in the spirit of
friendship, Team AnandTech and Team DSLR Starfire do mutually agree to the
following Terms of Engagement. It is the desire of both teams to keep this
competition honorable and friendly.

Each Team will name an Ambassador at Large. These Ambassadors will act as
intermediaries and handle any disputes which may arise prior to and during
the competition. Not withstanding, the Ambassadors may and are encouraged to
seek advice from senior members of their respective teams.

1. It is the desire of both teams to keep this competition honorable and
friendly. Both Teams agree that all Team and personal caches will be
uploaded the day prior to the start of the competition, by midnight December
31, 2001 CST, 10pm PST, 1am EST January 1, 2002, 6am GMT. The team caches
will be placed on and stay on "Auto Upload" for the duration of the
competition. Personal caches must be uploaded at least weekly.

2. At 1pm CST January 1, 2002 a designated team member of both teams will
pull the starting totals of completed WUs. The competition will commence at
1pm January 1, 2002 CST and will end at the same time, Central Time on
February 28, 2002.

3. Completed and uploaded WUs will only be counted which are produced in the
name of the respective teams after the commencement of the competition. Any
completed WUs brought to either team by a new member will be removed from
the total to date production for purposes of the competition only. Only
newly completed WUs will be counted. Each team will designate a statistician
who will handle this. Any challenges to this will be immediately reported to
the Ambassadors for clarification.

Let me explain. A new member's previously completed WUs will not count but
any WUs completed by that member after joining will count if they are
completed after the start of the race.

Stats keepers for DSLR will be Overhill with the official stats and a stats
graph added by Nothlit. Team Anandtech also has established a committee of
stats keepers that can be counted on if a problem arises. If you believe
there is a problem with the stats please IM your team ambassador.

4. If a member departs from either team his total WUs will not be deducted
from the team's race production. Instead only those WUs that were completed
after the start of the race will be subtracted.

5. Any team member who changes their name for whatever reason will make a
posting in their respective forum and notify their respective Ambassador who
in turn will notify his/her counterpart on the other team. Failure to comply
with this will result in the "newly added" past production being removed as
if it were from a new team member.

This is important please let us know before hand if you decide to change
your name. You will show up in the stats as a departed member and then a new
member and your previous WUs will be deleted when you depart.

6. Bragging, taunting and the like is highly encouraged. However it is
expected that it will be done in the spirit of the competition and there
will be no personal attacks made or inferred on any member of the opposing
team.

Let's be real ladies and gentlemen, we are above this. Do not post any
accusation in public; bring them to the team ambassador.

7. Any team member who feels that they see something that may be
questionable is to contact their team Ambassador by IM or email ONLY.
Flaming within the forums will not be tolerated by any team member!

I, as your Team Ambassador, can be reached throughout the race by PM, email (matt_weldy@hotmail.com), AOL IM (Weldy99), or MSN Messenger (matt_weldy@hotmail.com).

DSLR Team Starfire Ambassador, MgKnight, can be reached throughout the race by IM, email
(admrlmgknight@hotmail.com), or MSN Messenger (admrlmgknight@hotmail.com).

Good luck everyone, may the best TeAm win!

Hope everyone can work out the correct times for their region, we tried to help out as much as possible.

Evadman- That's exactly right dump those caches before the new year (CST).

Lets keep this clean guys the ambassadors will be analysing any large dumps at the bieginning of the race to catch sand-bagging so help make our job easier.

I have a question. My parents are going out of town Jan 2 - 31. I was going to fire up SETDriver on their machine on Dec 31 or Jan 1 and cache up about 120 WUs for them and leave their machine on. My 2 questions are:

1. What if I can't flush their cache on the agreed upon day?
2. What if I can't upload the WU weekly, rather I wait the entire month (until they get back) and upload them?

Thanks

P.S. Got my friend to join up. He's "quicken"

I'll be adding a work PC (PIII 500 via sneaker net) and will bring a few PCs (Gateway 6400 servers) home from my office, which I'm probably going to dump after next month anyway...why pay rent if I'm never there? :) Whew! My dining room will be loud! :D

I'll try and get a friend of mine to setup his Athlon 950, too.

Dewey- That will be perfectly acceptable. Thank you for notifying us in advance.

Please anyone else with a similar situation let us know in advance also. This will prevent any accusations of sand-bagging or disguising production.

I also wanted to let you know that if all goes well, my current production of a few WU's per day will jump significantly (100+ hopefully :) ) over the next week or so. I know DSL is aware of it in this thread, but I thought I'd be on the safe side.

Let's kick some DSL butt!

cool ! ,I can't wait to see your output leap up :D

Baldy18

10-4 on the rules ,but if you think I'm getting up at 6 am new years eve to flush a handful of WU's you got another thing coming!:p;).
I will flush earlier at around 1-3am ,that'll only leave a few in cache which I will flush in the afternoon.

I'm a bit confused:

4. If a member departs from either team his total WUs will not be deducted
from the team's race production
. Instead only those WUs that were completed
after the start of the race will be subtracted
.

Aren't the bolded statements conflicting?

Bunker- If I left the team on January 2 and I produced 30WU on January 1 my 3400WUs would be deducted from the teams total at Berkeley but on the 30WU from January 1 would be deducted from the race total. Hope that explains it better.

Assimilator1- Don't worry you don't have to dump at 6am just around then so you won't be holding a big pile of WUs at the start. The sheduled "dump by" time is 13 hours prior to the gathering of the starting stats, so we're hoping that by setting it at this time all the stragglers will remember to get their dumps in.

Okay, I understand it now, but not sure I agree. Why not just leave all the wu's there?

bunker- That was considered but we decided that since the members WUs are leaving the team total at least some of them should leave the race resaults also and this seemed like a fair way to do it.

Race starts January 1 so that is not a problem. We aren't handing out spankings or anything either guys.;)

If you have a situation that you can't help we will understand we would just like to know about it. Please PM me with info if "breaking the rules" is beyond your control.

My queue (SetiQ) uploads results/downloads WUs daily between 9AM and 3PM, HST. This will not change.

IN ADDITION TO THIS, there have been times my queue gets shut down:( on my day off (Monday or Tuesday). The workstations crunch until the WU is done. After completion they just hold it until the queue is back up. The overall result is a bigger dump, but a lesser total. (I just mention it 'cause somebody's bound to cry foul. Go bark up another tree DSLR.... these are my problems, not yours ;))

As most of my TeAmMates know I do not control the largest part of my mini-team. They are free spirits. Those over which I have direct control will follow the rules. The rest have received an email and the rest is up to them.

Now I'm off to build another computer and recruit a few more friends. :)

I think this is great to show these rules now. As for me, I can't run this race. Due to the Win2k + Outlook Issue. Already Fouled up my install. :| I wish both teams good luck and let the best cruncher team win! :D

I think I follow this- make sure I dump a load by Midnite, tomorrow.

Hmm, if I dump at my normal time, should have 4 crunched before the start.....

I pretty much know the dumping habbits of the people on our team so if someone cries foul I will be able to vouch that nothing out of the ordinary is going on. Pretty much just everyone keep up their normal habbits (except increase production of course:)).

krystalogik, using the gui you won't have to worry about doing any dumps. The gui only takes one wu at a time and then sends it back to berkeley and gets another one.

krystalogik, we'd really like to get you to uninstall that GUI version and use Method 2 as outlined HERE. That way you will be putting out an extra WU or two each day. :)
