I just saw that my local Target has Finaly Phantasy XI on clearance for $50. I don't own a PS2 so I'm not certain, but if the harddrive is useable on a PC or PS2 without the game, it seems like it could be a good deal.

Regardless, the game/HD is still $99 eveywhere else.

I guess it's nice if you are going to play it for the PS2, otherwise larger drives are cheaper after rebates :p

Is any hard drive compatible with a PS2? Can the FP drive be used for other stuff? I'm not a PS2 person at all, I'm just curious.

I believe the PS2 uses standard IDE drives in the slot.

The new slim PS2 on the other hand only takes HDDs through USB.

Whoa, are you sure that the new slim PS2 can use USB HDDs? That's the first that I've heard of that, I thought that it couldn't use any HD at all. That's good news if true. CompUSA, right now, has a USB 2.0 external 3.5in HD case for $30.

No, THe PS2 can not use just any HD. It has to be "marked" by sony. The only way you can use other HD's is for homebrew and HDLoader stuff. That said, I have a 160G maxtor on my PS2, but as I said, only for homebrew or HDLoader stuff. The New PSTWO can not use an IDE drive without extensive modification (which someone has done already). The USB drives (for PStwo only)will someday be able to be used with software the homebrew community is working on right now (I don't think it is out yet).

Does this include the network adapter??? I thought you needed that to use a hard drive with the PS2 and those are still ~$40, so the HD + adapter combo at $50 seems hot.

No, it does not include the online adapter.

cold deal. you're not factoring how much time you lose in real life. If you got the PC version, then you start playing it @ work too, which means you first have to install it which takes like 5-6 hours or whatever. Then you lose hours cuz you start playing @ work, then you lose your job, then however much you played @ home you play 2x now because you have no job, then you don't get anything done @ home then your gf gets pissed cuz you play too much and then she goes and find some other guy and he gets to spank her or if ur married ur wife does that too

Outof the box, no. There may be additional tools that allow this, but it's not something average Joe is going to gain out of the box. You can use this like a modded XBOX harddrive, but it obviously requires more tools and knowledge. Plus, it isn't exactly legal.

something the average joe could do? no. Illegal? no. Not even Sony's team of lawyers could successfully argue that it is illegal to store your save games on alternate media.

So does one still need that to use the hard drive? If so, I'm gonna go with warm to cold on the deal depending on one's desire for the game.

So far only Western Digital HD have wider IDE and power connection. most other HD will work with the PS2. PSTWO (Slim) can only taake advantage of USB harddrive when the new software called "usb loader" is avaliable.
