if you're into gaming i'd ditch the 2.1's, definitely go for 4.1 or better. I use the cheaper 7.1's from creative (with my audigy 2 zs) and my ears can never handle more then half way up in volume. everything sounds crystal clear to me, but if you're an audiophile i'm sure you can justify spending much more.
you can't get "into" a game on a 2.1 setup as you can with more speakers, its a much better experience, unless of course you're one of those typical online players that spend more time yapping/chatting then actually playing...
also get a good sound card, skip the onboard stuff if you're into gaming.
