After begging this forum, I figured I share what I decided on my new PC build.

AMD64 3500 winchester
XP-90 with panaflo 92m fan
DFI Lanboy Ultra-D
1 gig OCZ Plat rev2
Fortran BlueStorm 500 Watt PS
BFG 6800 OC GT 256MEG PCI-E (I really like my AGP version)
Seagate 7200rpm 300gig sata
NEC 16X DVD-RW (Dual layer support)
Antec SLK3000-B Case

Total Cost, around $1540.00

Here's to hoping this works out as a great pc with no problems durring the setup.

Yummy....

That would be nice. If you can, wait for the Venice core A64s to come out. The newer Winnies are having bad overclocking results, and all of the reviews of the Venices have them hitting 2.8GHz+ on air.

I wouldnt say bad just say venice core is better.

That's true. But, compared to the earlier Winchesters, they are bad. Even if you only get one hertz over stock, you can't complain, but if you have the chance to get better, you might as well.

Agreed on the RAM - just get high quality value RAM (no oxymoron there!). Heck, I intend to use my Crucial CAS 3 RAM in my next rig. Maybe I got lucky but it can happily do 220mhz or so at 2.5-2-2 @2.8V which is easily enough for an AMD64 which isn't badnwidth starved. At that spec my RAM would be within a couple of percentage points of any premium RAM and a hell of alot cheaper.

Also if you wanted to shave a bit of the graphics card you could get an ATI X800XL for comparable performance. However, there have been a few 6800 rebates floating around recently that could even the field.

If you're overclocking, you could look into a 3200+. Also if you do intend to overclock at all please wait for the Venice. Seems 2.7ghz+ on air is a real possibility.

Also remember to factor in other things like Artic Silver 5. Does the 3000B come with 2 120mm fans?

Possibly anothe heatsink set you could look at would be the Coolermaster series - Hyper 48 and Hyper 6. The Hyper 48 is dead quiet and efficient and might save you a bit of money - what I'd get.

Btw I'd almost look into get a 36GB raptor and a 200GB drive otherwise depending how much you're willing to spend. However, such a move would have small performance benefits and undoubtedly isn't worth the cost.

Man, $1540 is a whole lot for a computer. I'd be happy with a budget of $1200 to build 2 systems.

Agreed. I generally recycle 1/3 of the components of my previous computer to build a new one. I'm going to build a SFF this summer and my 9700 Pro, 80GB WD HDD, DVD+-RW, and other misc equipment is going into it. 🙂

I sell off my old pc's and build a new one ever year/2 years. My last box (p4 3ghz c i875p chipset) sold for 950.00. Plus I sold another PC that I had around for 600.00. So this box was basically free. I figured 1-2 years of high end proformace is great and the sale prices I get tipically cover my cost of the new build.

I am going to take a different approach with this build though. I plan on a processor and video card upgrade instead of a new pc next summer (I'm assuing chip prices for 4000+'s will be nice and low by then or something even higher). I might also do a ram upgrade sometime before then. Then I plan to use the left over parts to build my girlfriend a new shuttle (her current one is maxed out on heat and power). I figure the SN25p should be under 200.00 by then and I can reuse her dvd burner and hard drive. So just a new video card for her and she would be more than upgraded for her uses (mild gaming and a lot of videos/music/web stuff)

I really like all the suggestions though. A lot of input I received on this forum and on dfi-street helped me develop this build. WIthout it I would of had a lot of hard learning to do on hardware compatability and price/performance. I know I could of went a little cheaper on some stuff (ram for example) but I was worried about horror stories I've heard from people using value ram or corsair ram (for example).

Well anyways the fedex guy should be here today or tomarrow, and I can't wait 🙂

considering your projected upgrade path with video card and cpu, i would ditch the 3500+ and go with a cheaper 3000+ , that could save you up to 150$ right there (ive seen oem 3000+ 939's on sale very recently for 113$. hot! and the bfg 6800gt... isnt that like 450$ ? im sure u could find it a little cheaper, but still, thats a hefty premium over similar performance of the x800xl for 270$ . so potentially thats up to another 180$ saved.

i would sink my money into the best mobo that you could find. i wouldnt bother with sli either. chances are low that your gpu upgrade in 2 yrs will be 2 cards, probably just want the most badass one available at that time. the x800xl will do basically as well as the 6800gt for games in the next 2 yrs. (and face it, your going to upgrade when the new Unreal engine drops like all of us). thats a very important point.. unreal 3 wont run on ANY current graphics card, even sli ultras, and that will probably come out in about a year and a half (end 06?), so if you want to play it well, you'll need to get the bleeding edge cards of the time. i think both the 6800 and the xl will get you pretty well up to then, though games landing next christmas will probably start to make em hiccup. i just think at the pricepoint (270$) u gotta go with ati.

i also agree go with some good value ram. get a 1gb stick so u cant upgrade to 2gb ddr down the road

take the saved money and spend it on something else nice for your computer (since you seem focussed on spending 1500$. let say realistically you save 250$ , u could spend that on a nice surround speaker system if u dont have one. 2gb ddr would be nice, you'll start to see performance gains in games coming in the next 6 months (bf2, CoD2). you could get a lot of top quality peripherals for 250$ too. or put the 250$ towards a fp2005w dell, i think you can get one on sale now for like 450.

but regardless, if the money doesnt matter, you will have a very nice system.

^^^^^ and i dont want to come off sounding like an ati fanboy. i agree that 6800gt is probably a slightly better card all around, but the x800xl is just CHEAP for what it is. its the sweetspot in the high end market now.

btw dfi lan is a nice choice for mobo

The reason I went with the 6800 (I got it for 399) is that I tipically spend a lot of my time in linux (with a small windows partiton for gaming when I can't get the game to work in wine) and ati's drivers for linux basically just dont work for 3d (or at least I dont want to spend the time getting them to work.) Although I do recomend that ati card to friends of mine who dont use linux.
