they had their time... besides, they're still a necessity for the less internet savvy (ie. old folks or those who can't be bothered).

I, for one, will miss blockbuster. I like the fact that I can return my online movies in the store and get a movie from there in exchange w/o paying anything extra. So instead of a day or two day turnaround, I have 15 min turnaround

werd.

I love Blockbuster. I have great memories of renting games from them as a kid. And now, in the Netflix era, I still prefer Blockbuster. I'm on their Netflix-style subscription plan - being able to exchange the movie in the store is so much better. I keep my online queue for movies I've been meaning to see, and then I use my exchanges for impulse movies. Its great.

Die Blockbuster Die.

When my parents rented from blockbuster ( maybe 3-4 times a year ) they'd always return the videos on time. Months afterward we'd get a notice that something was late or missing. No matter the location ( different ones in NY & TX ) blockbuster would always screw up.

yeap. happened to me a few times. i stoped going until they offered the blockbuster online stuff. where if you returned a movie to a BB store got a free rental. i used that until they changed it where you couldn't do that anymore. Netflix is better though they do mess with you also.

While their business model is dated, it's still better than Netflix for areas far from Netflix distribution centers or places with unreliable mailmen. I think I remember one AT poster stating that some mailman "friend" of his had hundreds of Netflix discs at home. I've had one disc lost in shipment. I really wonder how "lost" it is.

Also, if BB does go BK, how long do you think it will be before Netflix prices increase?

This is why I rent from Redbox. I've rented about 20 to 25 movies in the last 6 months and haven't paid once.

Same here. according to them I owe them late fees. Ridiculous. I rent a handful of times per year, at the MOST, and this? crazy. I never return things late, period!

how do you manage that? return the same day?

blockbuster is going the way of redbox. they have kiosks here in atlanta, blockbuster express. excellent idea, i love redbox. 1 buck, 1 night. always have new releases, none of the waiting involved with netflix. i keep netflix for the older movies and tv shows i am still catching up on, but all of my new movies come from redbox these days.

I dunno how I feel about this.

I'm not really big on the Netfilx style of doing things. I don't rent movies often enough to justify the cost. And when I do want to rent a movie, I want it right then. I usually don't know what at first, and want to browse a bit. Then I want to watch it, not wait a couple days for it to get to me.

The other thing I have to say I like about Blockbuster: Now that they've really started selling the used movies, I can afford recent movies. I wait until they hit the 4/$20 rack to buy them though. Cheaper than Newbury Comics or FYE.

I guess I'll hope a mom/pop place buys blockbuster's collection in my hometown (though they all went out a few years ago...), or that Red Box machines get into town soon.

Yes, long live Blockbuster. They are a great American company.

Netflix is the screwed up idea. I dont want no damn contract just to watch a damn movie. D:

Blockbuster is very anti-American in the sense that they advocate censorship of art.

fuck them. fuck them long and hard.

I must be one of the few people who managed to rent from Blockbuster dozens of times without incurring late fees. Their business model is no different from other B&M video rental places (chain or smaller local shops): pay x dollars to rent a movie for a certain number of days, return the movie within the allotted time or pay a penalty. When they first came around, their selection blew away most local stores, and that helped them succeed and dominate the industry.

Their business model is simply unsustainable now. OnDemand, Netflix and RedBox have made Blockbuster obsolete, and they haven't been able to adapt. I won't shed a tear for their demise, but I don't really understand the passionate hatred people feel towards them.

We never had a Blockbuster in a convenient location, so we always rented from a local place. Movies were always due back the next day, not 5 days later. Taking a week or more to return a movie seems crazy to me, and allowing that movie to be out for so long without generating any revenue is equally crazy.

I will miss the game rentals... I don't rent games often enough to pay for a monthly subscription. To be honest though, I have no desire to pay $9 for a game rental. I only rented games when I could get coupons from Coke's rewards site.

They always release codes for 1 day rentals (on top of codes that they txt me every month). Here's the site where you can find current codes: http://www.insideredbox.com/redbox-codes/

I think movie rental places in general are going to go under. The best one we had here was Jumbo Video, and it recently closed after many years of operation.

The days of going out to rent a movie are nearly over. Why go out when you can just download it off the internet? We are growing more and more lazy every day.

imho it's moving to the kiosk model. grabbing a movie while grocery shopping or whatever else is uber convenient, as well as cheap and easy.

It's their own damn fault for not changing their business model - $1 day rental or netflix is what people want - cheap affordable entertainment.

Albertson's [grocery store] closed their video rental section awhile ago and the local Hollywood Video is [finally] going out of business.

Having it mailed to you - or streamed directly to your TV - is even more convenient....

I did like the method of finding a new movie by browsing the store. However, most of the time people have a particular movie in mind when they go, so a store's selection only makes it slightly harder to find the movie you want.
