Final Laptop Decision - Please Comment

I can get a good deal on this Compaq laptop where I work:

Compaq Presario 2700
1.06GHz Pentium III-M
128MB PC133 SDRAM (Will get more from Crucial.com)
20GB Hard Drive
8x DVD-ROM
Choice between 14.1" SXGA or 15" XGA Display
Integrated 56k Modem and 10/100 NIC
16MB ATI Radeon Mobility
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

All for around 1350. Should I get it? What is the difference between XGA and SXGA?

Sounds like a good deal (especially considering it comes with XP Professional). The difference between XGA and SXGA is the resolution:

XGA - 1024x768 max resolution
SXGA - 1280x1024 max resolution

Personally, I would get the 15" display and run it at 1024x768, which is what most 15" stand-alone LCDs run anyway.

Nope, I've never liked or trusted anything made by compaq. They always seem to be unreliable, poor performing pieces of crap. But of course, that is just one opinion..

I got a Compaq 1800T last year and am quite pleased with it. It's a nicely-designed unit with fantastic speakers, good ergonomics, and solid perfomance. (Although there is a lot of factory-installed bloatware.)

I got mine with the 15" SXGA+ screen, which runs at 1400x1050 and is fantastic. The keyboard is good, the screen and speakers are standouts. Great machine for DVDs and listening to music.

Get a 5400 rpm drive if you can. 4000 rpm is S-L-O-W if you're used to 7200 on the desktop.

Mine came with the Mobility 128 chip. It can run q3 adequately, but I find I wait and play on the desktop.

Always go for the bigger screen. The higher resolution will just tax your Videocard.

I have a similar system . . . Dell Inspiron 4100 . . . my PIII-M is 866Mhz and it will run all the current videogames at native 1024x768 resolution with details set to MID or 800x600 with all details set to HIGH. That ATI Radeon card is pretty nice (especially compared with the earlier Rage 128 chipset).

However, if you are a SERIOUS gamer, the GeForce2Go is better for just a little more $$ (better than that is the Mobility Radeon 7500 but it is only found in notebooks twice your price range).

Mine was $1200 but I opted for the 10GB HD and extra battery instead (It is only used for when I am away from my desktop like the 10 weeks in Hawaii beginning early next month - I got an external 4x USB Philips CD-RW to do backups . . . Hot Deals has a similar one right now for about $90).

Make sure you check Hot Deals, anyway. There are some excellent notebook deals right now . . . 😉

ohhh .. dont forget to buy more than 1 year warranty.
