Hmmm... I've heard the FF fans not liking this one too much, but personally I'm not a FF fan so what they hate about I may like. Would anybody consider this a good buy if my biggest gripe with FF (and JRPGS in general) is the menu focused turn based comabat?

I've not played it but methinks it contain the same menu-focuses turn based combat.

If that was your biggest gripe pick up a copy of Tales of Vesperia. Cheesier story, MUCH better (live action) combat.

This, along with Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy X-2, are one of the few FFs I could not even finish due to poor quality.

I picked up the game for $20 from best buy:

The story is ridiculously cheezy, and also IMHO overwhelms the game. You literally play the game for only like 5-10 mins at a time, then get an extended cutscene. So it's like 10 mins playing, then 5-10 mins watching a cut-scene. Rinse & repeat...No wonder its on 3 DVDs. I also was somewhat annoyed with a couple of the characters ("Hope" & "Snow"), but it's early yet so maybe they'll come around. The graphics are pretty good.

Fighting takes place in a semi-turn based format but has a time element (i.e. you can't just take your time deciding what to do). I have limited options so far, but I expect that's because I'm still very early into the game. I've only played it ~ 4 hrs, and so far it's been really easy and totally scripted.

I hope it gets more open-ended & challenging.
