Final Fantasy 7 remaster

If square messes with the combat system and makes it real time like the current games you couldn't pay me to play it.
 
For me, having to wait on combat loading is one of the largest impediments to going back and replaying.

Do you really just want to endure loading time, or does making it "real-time" alter the combat itself that is associated with removing the loading but not directly a result?

The classic Final Fantasy games and most of the JRPGs from Squaresoft were turn based where you had to plan your attacks and usage of items. They were more strategic. The real time combat just isn't implemented in their newer titles very well to many who prefer the old system.

Ahhh....well in that case, all I mean is, where the combat can launch immediately without a loading screen. Didn't mean for the combat itself to be altered, just that you get into it instantly.
 
So there is an FF7 HD release that will be essentially the original game but in HD (i'd imagine load times would be much improved). Then there is also a remake and they have stated to expect some changes. So we get the best of both worlds there.

There's no FF7 HD release. There will be the FF7 Remake, and the current "ported around" versions of the old PC version.

I'm not sure that I would want to see the enemies on screen; if they keep with the old size of the areas they would seem cramped I think. Given newer technology I'd think they could opt for a quick phase into a battle screen; no loading screen whatsoever but have the enemies appear on the current map or something.

I hope it comes to PC (or that I get a PS4 by then).

According to what we know it will be more than just remastered graphics, I really hope they have FF12's real time combat (no loading screens to get into a fight).

Not sure if you're talking about the remaster or the remake. The remaster should be exactly the same as FF7, just with higher resolution graphics, maybe better cutscenes. The remake is a new game in current gen graphics and more changes. From the changes, they would be stupid if they changed the combat system to real time. If they're targeting this game for older players nostalgia, then they should keep it turn based. That doesn't mean there can't be improvements, like maybe a turn based/action (like what you can see in games like The Last Remnant or White Knight Chronicles), maybe replace random encounters with encounters on map, etc.
 
The HD version is nothing new. They are simply porting the enhanced PC version to console.

The remake they've already said it will be different, with a slightly changed storyline and other things.

And to answer OP's question - it is said to be a PS4 exclusive for a period of time, then coming to PC.
 
I'm just glad it will be cross platform so I don't have to buy a ps4. They said first on ps4. Going by the way they announced other things at the Sony press conference, if it was only on ps4 and PC it would be console exclusive so it's probably ps4 and Xbox One, likely PC as well.
 
I think a lot of people confuse remake with remaster.

Sony is not saying whether or not the remake is exclusive or is a times exclusive or what. That leads me to believe it is not a full exclusive and will be on other systems at some point.

They said at their press conference "First on PS4".

They said for exclusives, "PS4 Exclusive".

They said for PS4 and PC games, "Console Exclusive".

It's clearly coming to Xbox One at some point.
 
never understood the whole FF universe and catching a small part of some movie on it years back didn't help.

There isn't a Final Fantasy universe. Each game is a total separate universe. The only thing they share are the summons, title and a character called Cid.
 
They do this right (aka JRPG) then I buy a PS4. They mess it up (aka make it into a western action RPG) and I never purchase another game that has Final Fantasy on it ever again.

There is no margin for error. Square is going back into the vault and messing with one of the few reasons a generation of people have positive association with their brand. They screw this up and the hate George Lucas got for the Star Wars prequels will seem tame.

To be more exact, there is always a character named Cid...not that its the same person.

Also, there is (almost always) a Biggs and Wedge.

If they allow you to save Aerith/Aeris...GARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I would be really sad at a retcon of this magnitude. FF Crisis Core made it where each character's personal emotions truly lay. Her death was immensely critical to the story, and she was even used as a plot device to guide the group to the next set of actions. To bring her back would show that ultimately there are no real consequences lol.

If anything, it would be better to see some details fleshed out more; perhaps more discussion regarding mako reactors and the "eco-terrorists" of Avalanche. I'd like to see more information surrounding Hojo and Jenova. There are a lot of interesting things to add to the story - so hopefully non critical parts are the parts that get altered so new content can be inserted.

It won't be a traditional JRPG - if you are hoping for ATB bars filling up that seems to be an era that is gone for Square. There will be more real-time elements in it...

I know which is why I am not getting excited about it. In fact I am almost downright pissed it is happening.

I knew FF7 was going to be redone one day. I just hoped it would be some crash and burn version of Square that did it so that way it could be a real JRPG. Oh course now we know that a crash and burn Square would probably turn it into a freemium game so I will never get what I really want (a HD copy of FF7).

Time to go replay my modded PC version...

fwiw, FF7 was never turn-based. It was always "active-time" (not to be confused with "Real-time," which is what I guess you see in FFXII and on?)

FF X (and I) were turn-based. I think the real FFII on Japanese NES was also turn-based, but that wasn't released in USA so it doesn't count. 😀

FF II--the real one, because it was America FFII--was the first "Active time" system.

Good points. People use "real time" battles as the line of demarcation and it's not.

To me the line is this: when I want to attack an enemy, do I select it in a menu and then the enemy gets attacked or do I have to run up to the enemy and actually hit them with a weapon?

Menu based battle system= A Good Final Fantasy

Actually have to hit the enemy= An Abomination Carrying the Name Final Fantasy

I know there are some hybrid systems, like the Stick of Truth or Super Mario RPG when if you hit a button at the right time the damage increases or whatever. I am not a fan of hybrid systems, but I will take a hybrid system over a WOW system anyday. Often in those systems I gravitate towards characters whose attacks rely less on these timing elements.

The hard part of a great JRPG is never ever how you conduct a battle. The battle should be won or lost based on how prepared you are before your fight- aka the levels you are at, the equipment you have, etc. The hard part should NEVER be perfectly timing attacks, it should be the patience needed to grind some damn enemy a hundred times to get some rare item drop that then breaks the game in your favor.

I don't think cut away battles are needed though. How Chrono Trigger did it (enemies on screen, menu comes up when fight starts) is perfect. Every RPG since Chrono Trigger should have just been copying Chrono Trigger.
 
HD remakes of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 that keep mostly true to the originals would make all sorts of parts wet.

Kinda like blizzard though, square isn't the same company that made those gems. It lives on in name only.
