so, the grand daddy of the 3d graphics era is out as of yesterday... anyone know much about it? even tho it's far from my fave, while i had a job, i wouldn't have put any thought arguing against $9.99. also, had it been Steam, i would have traded a pile of games for it.

wondering if the videos are SD or scaled... how the 3d graphics look (someone said the fan tweaks looked wonky; hi res polys on a ultra low res bg)... and the cloud saves (if you have a choice for local saves, too). i can't believe there's such a big game out without reviews!

From what I read, it was just updated to run on modern systems and a few other features (cloud saves, cheats). Otherwise they didn't touch a single other thing in the game.

Yeah, awesome game.

I played it around 15 years ago, and a few more times since then.

I've replayed this game so many times. I have it on my psp which is more than adequate though. Yeah, you could buy it on the playstation store for like $5 for years now. It has always been there. I think I'm done with it finally.

I would love to hear your reasoning behind overrated. Is it your favorite - probably not, but it's far from overrated.

I would argue that the story is far overrated. I tend to watch a bit of anime, and it reminds me a lot of those weird, mind-fuck stories that try their hardest to be deep and thought-provoking, but they're actually... not. It's like an M. Night Shyamalan movie where he tries to make it all crazy and thought provoking by throwing in some odd, nonsensical twist. Using that analogy, FF6 = Unbreakable, FF7 = The Village. :p

However, I do think that the game served an important purpose to help bring Japanese RPGs to the masses who had previously skipped out on the 16-bit era of games.

I get where you're coming from. That kind of stuff annoys me; a story pretending to be more than it is and vague on purpose only because the author didn't ever really have a way to flesh it out as it wasn't practical to begin with. And then they pass the vagueness off as being something more than your mind can comprehend therefor we are just going to leave it as making no sense.

I remember there being some questionable parts of the game. I think they did piece it together with other stuff later though(crisis core, for instance)
And in the end it pretty much all made sense even though some things were shaky.

In my opinion this game was quite solid though and not like what you describe it being. My memory is a bit fuzzy but everything from materia, to sephiroth's origin/story, to mako, to the 'followers'(including Cloud) seems to make sense. I do remember having some wtf moments but later was able to piece the story together after more playthroughs.

I've seen you bring up ff6 before. That was a very solid game and it didn't throw crazy story at you. In the end though it pretty much had no mini games, was pretty short, it didn't pull any emotions out of me concerning the characters(actually I don't think I gave a shit one way or another about the characters), the game felt like it was on rails, and if I recall it ended abruptly. The game was more solid, but also not quite as broad and lacked some depth with character development.

Edit: I think the best thing to compare ff7 with is ff2(us)ff4 with Cecil, tella, palom and porom, kaine, ...(my spelling is probably off with the names). There was a gaping plothole near the end if I remember correctly but it was worth overlooking. The characters were amazing, the story was thrilling, the adventure was captivating and scary, it was a difficult game.

You know, I don't think I ever finished this game before, same with FFVIII... I can remember almost all of it, and yet I don't remember the ending, so I can't remember finishing it.

FF7 is overrated, it isn't even the best of the FF games, let alone RPG's

So many people got huge boners and suddenly became RPG fans when FF7 came out because it was the prettiest game we have ever seen at the time. A lot of people played it just because it was so damn pretty and it was there first RPG and they still get a nostalgia boner over the game.

Mini-games didn't really exist in Final Fantasy games before VII. At least there weren't any that I remember. So, I'll make this rose-colored statement:

In the 2D era, we didn't need games in our games (dawg) to make them good! :colbert:

Well, the lack of character development in Final Fantasy VI can be attributed to the ridiculous amount of characters that are available near the end. However, I definitely must disagree if you don't think there are emotional ties in FFVI. What about when Kefka poisons Castle Doma's water supply, which ends up killing Cyan's wife and daughter? Combine that with the song that plays (The Unforgiven) and it's a scene that I still remember today.

Then there's the scene where you're playing as Celes on the island after the floating continent, and you fail to keep Cid alive. This was removed in all versions after the SNES release, but Celes actually tries to kill herself by jumping off the cliff. Then there's the opera house scene with her and the wonderful MIDI rendition of Aria de Mezzo Caraterre. It's like listening to the adults in Peanuts sing. :D

One of my favorite songs from the game has to be Forever Rachel, and it's used during some rather sad scenes dealing with Locke and his love, Rachel. It plays when you first find her lying in a coma, and get to see what happened to her. If I remember correctly (I haven't played it since the SNES), it plays again when you bring the damaged Phoenix esper to Rachel in an attempt to revive her. The shard shatters, she comes to life and reassures Locke before fading. After she fades, the Phoenix esper reappears whole again (she's now the Phoenix esper).

Final Fantasy IV definitely has some great scenes in it. I tear up a bit every time Palom and Porom sacrifice themselves to save the group. :'(

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past had some minigames.

Anyways, does this still have crappy midi files for the music?

I know you were talking to someone else, but I also kind of consider FF7 to be a bit overrated. It was a good game and all, but I don't see it as being this great immortal game.

One of the things that bugged me about it is the lack of any real direction. I remember the first time I played it, I get out of Shinra City (or whatever it's called, I forget now) and you have to find your way to a farm house... I was pretty close to my death bed (character wise) by the time I finally found it after wandering around the world map for a while. There's a fine line between open world exploration and making sure that players know where to go.

Then the plot itself seemed a little out there. Sephiroth was a cool bad guy and all, but (spoiler warning)

the fact that he was really part of some ancient race and Cloud was injected with some of his cells which gave them this telepathic link... As the game went on, it just seemed to get more and more out there. That people's souls went back into this sort of underground river when they died, and the evil Shinra company was extracting this energy to make electricity, etc.

Being able to beat up on some corporate executives was kind of a nice touch however. Completely implausible that they could take that kind of punishment, but that's so not the point.

I will admit that Final Fantasy 8 and 9's plots both got to be more and more out there as they went along. FF8's plot just kind of completely broke down around the time they explain Elone's part in the story, and 9's plot isn't a whole lot better once they start explaining Zidane's origins. So, there are plot issues with all three PSX FF games.
