Final Fantasy 15 TGS Trailer

Final Fantasy is my favorite franchise but after looking at that I can guarantee I won't buy it or play it. I hope the sales bomb so bad they finally just give us what we REALLY want.

They didn't really show a whole lot. I kinda like the fighting style they displayed, but need to see way more to have an idea.

It doesn't bother me, but I'm pretty used to anime. Although, it will seem really weird to drive around in what looks like a convertible Audi while playing a Final Fantasy game. 😵

As for a related topic... we all know that Square-Enix has received a bit of flak as of late for their somewhat poor treatment of the Final Fantasy franchise. Square-Enix have even admitted this in regard to Bravely Default's success and Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns poor reception from the fans. So, with the negative air, you may expect the company to try to appease said fans. To give them a taste of Final Fantasy XV, Square-Enix will release a demo for the game, but in my opinion, the problem arises in how they are releasing it.

Back in the day, it wasn't uncommon to package demos with a game, because apart from being included in gaming magazines, it was a good distribution method. However, today, it's more common to see demos released to the respective console marketplace for fans to enjoy. Square-Enix decided to go with a mixed solution here. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD will release in March 2015 with a download code for the Final Fantasy XV demo.

Expecting your fans to buy a $60 HD remake (PS4 X1) of a PlayStation Portable game just to get the chance to try the game that should help to restore faith in the series seems like quite a low blow.

I don't like the fact that the four guys look so identical, 4 slender, metro looking Asian dudes. The only female character they showed is in the same vein of cutesy asian perverted-hentai-inspiring model that they've been using in FF games since 8.

I prefer a diverse cast of over-exaggerated RPG tropes and stereotypes, like big fat tank-fighter, slender rogue, frail mage, etc. FF9 was probably the last FF that did it.

I guess I was open to giving FF15 a shot, but after watching that trailer I'm just not interested. I 100% agree w/ artemicion. Bring back RPG tropes! I want 'Final Fantasy' not 'Malice Mizer takes a road trip to Jurassic Park.'

I wasn't interested in FFXV at all, but after that trailer I'm cautiously optimistic. It looks like Dragon's Dogma, but instead of walking around with a bunch of slightly retarded randoms around you are driving around with fellow ikemen.

It looks weird, but I think weird is good.

Would be nice, but I can let that stuff slide if the game is really well done.

I loaded up the video honestly ready and waiting to type out of my hatred for it already...

...but I'm going to hold off, for now. It's not a very good trailer, as far as trailers go, but it didn't show anything that repulsed me either.

Don't get me wrong, it could still be a god-awful plot and character clusterf*ck of the highest order like FFXIII, and be one long, dull, hallway in the gameplay department as well.

But most of that can't be translated through a trailer (especially one in Japanese).

I'll keep a cautious eye on it.

One problem I think the FF has had since FFx has been the complexity of the game. How long did you spend pressing x at just the right time for 200 times in a row just to get Lulu's special weapon? Or trying to get an ultra rare drop from the right creature so you can then make the right weapon so you can break it down to get three more of the rare so you can make more ultimate weapons. And don't forget you need a massive amount of Gil for the parts and if you already beat the game you cannot reach the best Gil grinding spot.

Heh, those types of things have never bothered me on 60+ hour jrpg's. That type of thing are in more than just the ff games. For example, one of my favorite games of all times, Shadowhearts Covenant, has a good 20 hours plus worth of game play, once you unlock the final dungeon of the game, if you wanted to run around and get everyone's ultimate weapons and armor and such. I actively look forward to that part of the game.

No, what I have a problem with, with the latest ff games, is that they are actually getting further and further away from being turn based rpg's. The last true turn based game they put out was, what, 10? Heck, 12 more or less played itself once you set the gambits up. I forgave it that, to a certain extent, 1 because it was the first one that went that route, and I thought it was just an experiment, and they'd go back to turn based, and 2 because it had a larger problem i that the characters in the game were mostly pretty boring.

I remember reading an interview with the main developer/producer, and he basically said they were shooting for a game where the focus of it was the grand politics of the world, rather than the characters. And it showed. Quite a boring game, from a storytelling stand point.

Then, 13 rolled around, and instead of getting better, it got worse. It went back to trying to tell a personal story, for the charcters involved. But, most of the characters are either annoying (Faith, Snow), or kind of boring (lightning). Saaz was the only halfway decent character in the game, imo. I will note that I never finished that game. So, perhaps they got better or worse as the game went along. But, on top of that, the gameplay still wasn't back to what I wanted it to be...i.e. turn based. In fact, it was even farther from what I think it should be.

And, now we have this, ff15. Honestly, I haven't even gotten around to watching the trailer. I should, but I just haven't been about to drum up any interest in the game. From what I've seen, it's not an rpg at all, just an action game with maybe some rpg trappings on it for old times sake. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

The technology part doesn't bother me. Alot of ff games have technology in them. Trains, planes, guns, etc, etc. One car doesn't seem that strange to me.

On a side note, I do laugh a little every time I see someone complain about the lightning dodging quest for the ultimate weapon in ff10. I had the same complaint myself, having tried and failed at that game many times. And, then I read the trick to that mini game....and it made it easy. Extremely easy. Took me 2 tries, and about 15 minutes, and it was done. It was so easy then, it was like all the frustration I had with it prior to that was a big fat lie.

Truthfully, I'd rather do that mini quest 5 times in a row, rather than deal with some of that chocobo racing stuff.

In my case it never bothered me because I never bothered with them. To me most optional 'epic' content is just that, optional, as in, I just ignore them. These games are long enough already (jRPGs typically run in the 60+ hours) without me spending 10 hours just to get a rare weapon (or an achievement, for that matter). I just do the story and when the big baddy is down, game is over.

This I totally agree, the last FF game I thoroughly enjoyed was FF X (and X-2), after that they started moving further and further away from turn based, and this new one is basically an action RPG, so Final Fantasy is officially over for me.

Eventually they will bottom out and go back to the roots.

To be fair, Final Fantasy XV was originally Final Fantasy Versus XIII. I always looked at the game as a grittier, more mature version of Kingdom Hearts, and that made sense given the game directors are (or rather, were) the same person (Tetsuya Nomura). I guess what I'm trying to get at is that this game is really more of a core Final Fantasy game just in name. It would be like if Square-Enix renamed Dirge of Cerebus to Final Fantasy VIII. 😛

EDIT:

I saw an article on IGN about how Tabata, the new director, stated that the game is only 55% done with development. Fortunately, he also went on to reassure everyone that it wouldn't take another eight years to get the second half done. Although, it does mention that the platform change (from 360/PS3 to X1/PS4) took place a couple years ago, and it took them two years to get to a point where they could show a demo.

That makes you wonder if they'd be better off licensing an engine?

The FF games seem to have at one major extra quest that I try to mostly complete. For 12 it was the hunts; bothering to beat Yiazmat is a little much but I was able to complete the other hunts. For 13-2, it's the alternate timelines plus the unlocked missions. The grinder stuff (like 10's celestial weapons) I skipped.

I liked it. I think the look of these civilized/technologically advanced guys juxtaposed against what appears to be a somewhat untamed/wild world is cool. A vague Shadow of the Colossus vibe from it even because of that and the enormous adamantoise creature. I hope it's not just for the trailer but the gameplay all seemed to occur without any HUD in place which I liked. Also I loved how the one guy cut out the legs from under the charging creature and that leg actually crumpled and it collapsed onto the shoulder on that side - that kind of physics/fidelity could be an amazing wrinkle in terms of gameplay.

I do think the character design could stand to be a little more varied, they all seemed cut from the same cloth.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's no small amount of pride/culture that goes into not doing that. Square has boatloads of talent but they're also slightly stubborn and traditional.

Can we STOP giving Square-Enix credit for Bravely Default's success? That was 90% Silicon Studio's doing.

Square-Enix hasn't made a decent RPG since Final Fantasy VI, and even most of their remakes are garbage.
