Next year the car is 25 years old and exempt from inspections by state law. In a way, my car just passed its final exam. 🙂

Hooray for the cheaper registration that starts next year too. This is why I love old cars.

Wrong! They stopped doing that, so expect another smog check letter in two years. Also, they're thinking about stepping up the inspection frequency because older cars are more prone to failure, ala annual inspection.

Uh, no. Washington State law has not changed. The people at the inspection station mentioned that this was the last time I'd need an emissions test when I handed them the paperwork, I didn't bring it up. And my almost 35 year old car has never needed an inspection in the time I've owned it.

In this case you're simply FOS.

BTW, my bother-in-law owns a smog shop. The EPA rules over all of smog shits in this good ole US of A and California do take it further than most states regarding smog, but the 25 years shit was EPA mandated, and unless your car born on date was before 1975? You're SOL.

Ask your smog technician when's the last time he went for an update class. If he hasn't heard about it, he will soon and don't be surprised when that letter comes to you; not if, but when.

One reason they did it was because too many beaters were running around spewing smog and didn't fall into that "classic" category.

Yeah, still going with you being FOS on this since you can't seem to provide a link and your only proof is equivalent to the old "a friend of a friend" BS.

Also, the 25-year bit is not EPA mandated. Arizona's current standard is that cars are exempt when they hit 15 years old.

My car is a '91 and has not been smogged since I've owned it. Yes, it is inspected.

He's just another California wacko who doesn't understand that not all states do it the same way. CA no longer has an exemption for vehicles over 30 and they were trying in '07 to pass a mandatory yearly inspection, but so far I don't think they've gotten traction on that. Last I heard of it was in '07, nothing since.

I might be ok with a yearly inspection. Some of the beaters the mexicans drive around here are pretty damn sketchy.

smog testing is only required in urban areas that have a history of pollution problems. when I lived in the DFW area, I had to smog test every year but when I moved to KC area there is no smog testing no matter the year of the car.

Only ever had one smog check, I lived in Dayton Oh for a bit while GM launched the new Trailblazer plant.

I'd love to pull up to a shop in the 'vette though, you could easily run a couple prius's on the raw fuel I dump out the pipes lol.

the insane cost of running testing centers has ensured they will never roll it out statewide either, thank god.

that only applies to collector cars and show cars. there is a static rule of pre 1967 doesnt need emissions. i think they should rethink that ruling. and my 1980 cadillac passes with less emissions output than my 2001 truck. same with my old impala, they actually made me retest it twice, and had their supervisor come inspect it because they thought i was cheating somehow. it registered near zero on all tests. reality was, it was freshly rebuilt and very clean.

i think a rolling 25 year limit on emissions is a good thing, wish they would do it here. as it is, the registration for the cadi is under 20 bucks. it costs more to test than to register it.
 
hes still searching for something resembling a leg to stand on, because its the internet, its way to hard to admit that you were wrong/improperly informed....
