ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A cigarette tossed by a passing driver likely sparked a fire in a horse trailer on Interstate 95 that killed six thoroughbreds Friday night, according to the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

The truck was northbound on I-95 south of Rocky Mount, when a camera showed the driver that smoke was coming from the horses' stalls in the trailer, state troopers said.

The driver woke up a back-up driver in the cab, and they tried to put out the fire, but it quickly got out of control.

One of the drivers suffered burns while trying to save the horses, but they all died.

Troopers said a discarded cigarette from a passing vehicle likely flew into one of the partially open stalls, setting fire to the hay, troopers said.

The vehicle was transporting the horses from Florida to New York.

I-95 was closed after the fire, causing traffic to back up for miles.

It is my opinion that if smokers blow smoke in my direction I should have the right to fart in their faces. Same difference.

I MOTHERFUCKING HATE IT when smokers throw their shit out the window. I FUCKING HATE IT. Just the thought of it MAKES ME TYPE IN ALL CAPS IN A RAGEFEST1!$!%r!%rk!##%!%!

I always wanted to toss my spit can onto a car that flicked a cigarette butt out, but the situation has never presented itself.

It's not proven that a cigarette caused this nor is it true that all smokers are bad. Some are respectful. Even though I hate smoking with a passion, there are still worse yet habits.

Smokers should be forced to smoke with windows up. An officer should be allowed to stop their vehicles to ensure their ashtrays are even present yet alone used.

Some off ramps literally end up with a 1"+ pile of these each week.

You're not in p&n

I have no problem with people that chose to smoke BUT when the start doing stuff that impacts others I get pretty pissed about it. It's just rude and that's probably why so many people hate smokers.

I remember my teacher in middle school related a story where she got out of her car at a red light, picked up a freshly thrown cigarette, and handed it right back to the asshole driver that threw it out onto the road.

😀

I will do the same if I ever see that.

Depending on where you are that could be a dangerous move.

If the fine for littering is $200, then the fine for throwing a burning object out the window should be at least double that. A little publicity of this news story should be all that's needed to get troopers to start handing out tickets left and right to people who throw lit cigarette butts out the window. (Even for the $200 fine.) States that are using tickets to generate revenue are missing out on a cash cow.

QFT...yet sadly I am thinking the cops and their bosses want them targeting the more likely to pay people.

While I do see busted up cars pulled over in neighborhoods late at night, almost every speeder or otherwise stopped is a nicer car with a professional looking driver (usually on a cell phone probably having to cancel appointments/meetings).

I don't get it.

Just a month ago I was stopped for my stereo. If my windows were up I'd have been fine, but this cop wanted to make whatever example of me all the while that booming cars were stopped next to us as well as hauling ass by.

There are certain streets here that they can camp a cop at all day long and be giving out stop sign and speeding tickets. Day in and day out, but they don't. Instead they pick some off the beaten path place to nail a driver doing 25 in a 15 where only empty lots are.

I don't get the enforcement at all.

There is a theory that a cigarette thrown out the window caused the fire that resulted in all the people killed in the tunnel in Europe. The cigarette was sucked into the vent of a semi-truck where it caused the filter material to smolder and ignite causing the engine fire which resulted in the larger fire. The truck was hauling margarine which is normally safe until you combine it with fire and a forced air flow from the tunnel.

same for those who throw trash out the window, may not kill anyone but still disgusting, disrespectful jackasses

I thought you were making up shit until I actually googled it 😱

This is not a smoker's fault. It's a lazy person's fault. Not all smokers toss their lit butts everywhere.

Stupid non-smoking narrow minded jerkfaces need to learn to blame the right fault for problems.
