I have an sx40, I know there is an official 67mm filter adapter available for it. There is also a 58mm adapter available from lensmate. 58mm would obviously be cheaper for the filters but I have heard mixed reviews about vignetting. Anyone have experience either way?

Front elements are tough and don't need filters unless they are trick filters like polarizers or ND filters, etc. Modern sensors are almost immune to UV radiation so UV filters do not count... they are there for (unnecessary) protection. That said, it does help the lens keep clean and is good for resale value. But the price of a sx40 is so cheap that it is probably not worth protecting. For $600+ sure.

Try not to use anything smaller than the filter thread of the lens or you may get vignetting, as you mentioned.

I have the Lensmate adapter on my SX40, with a UV filter to protect the lens from scratches. Haven't had any problem with vignetting.

I have used a filter ring adapter for several years. Got it for my SX20, it fit the SX30, and now fits the SX40. It is a thin plastic ring that accepts standard 58mm filters. I use it only for a circular polarizer. It was custom made by an engineer, I believe in Hawaii. It may be what became the Lensmate.

I keep it assembled with the polarizer and lens cap. The standard SX cap does not fit, so I then use a standard Canon 58mm cap. Here is is with pieces separated:

And this shows it mounted on the SX40. It travels in my SX40 case in the small filter case shown - all assembled and ready to use.

I have never experienced any vignetting with this ring.
