Film industry hails 'piracy win'

The US movie industry has hailed its settlement with a company making copying software as an important step in its fight against DVD piracy.
Software firm 321 Studios agreed to pay a "substantial" settlement to the Motion Picture Association of America.

The company was forced to close down last week after a federal court ruled its copying program illegal.

The MPAA says the financial settlement will go towards raising awareness of illegal copying and copyright theft.

321 Studios had argued that it had developed the programs DVD X Copy and Games X Copy as a means for customers to back up their own DVDs and games.

But the MPAA and games makers argued the programs, which circumvented copy protection devices, infringed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Didya ever see that one episode of happy days where kirk was trying to get rid of teh fonz?....................

Thank God for the coders that bring us things like DVD XCopy and DVD Shrink; we'd be lost w/o those guys!!

DVD Shrink is still out there, still free and still works to make BACK UP COPIES of my DVDs.

Screw the MPAA, RIAA and every other AA out there...especially THE AA. Bourbon for Breakfast suits me just fine, you bastards. 😉

It's kind of funny.

I'm sure, if one of my dvds becomes unplayable, the studio will replace it without hassle. 🙂

Did you read that quote from the MPAA guy...when asked what people should do when their DVDs become unplayable through normal wear and tear he says "They should buy another one."

Fvcking assholes.

Cheers!

Yeah, but it still sets a scary precedent.

What precedent? That you can get sued out of existence by people with more money than you? 😵 nothing new, they just didn't have the resources to fight back.

i smell a class-action suit!

I feel sorry for the guy who not only takes such poor care of their dvd that it is rendered useless but also has to use a backup version of the dvd which inevitably be split on two dvds or missing lots of features.
