filling out your job performance self-appraisal...

do you list details of almost everything you did?

I don't want anything I helped with to go unnoticed but I don't want to go overboard with too many lines in the self appraisal.

Any ideas on what works out best for a good review from your previous experience?
 
I'm the best thing since sliced bread! No one has ever been so foolish as to ask my opinion on the job I do. Maybe it's because I tell them I'm awesome and a catering God most every day.
 
It doesn't matter what you put in there, since your employer will probably use the bad economy as an excuse to either give you a lousy raise or no raise at all this year.

That said, make sure to mention anything that you did this year that helped to either bring in revenue or save the company money. Mid level managers like seeing things that help the bottom line, since they can take credit for it when reporting to their bosses.
 
Do you have to address multiple criteria? Or is it totally free-form?

It is basically free form

It says to list up to 4 main contributions

I broke it up into 4 sections (like business development, PMO, etc) and made a list of what I accomplished to help the company
 
I did this for the first time a few weeks ago...interesting experience.

Ours is very structured, we first set several goals (with management) at the beginning of the year, which have threshold, target, and maximum values associated with them. Then we basically self-appraise those goals, but are free to add anything else if anything unexpected came up (it didn't). Then we have to fill out some bullshit about which of the six "components to success" (something like that) we excelled at and which we need to improve at.

Then my direct supervisor actually "grades" us on each facet before it gets approved by my director. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.
 
I think it depends on the company. Last year I didn't write that much and got the raise I expected.

This year there is a chance I could get promoted so I wrote a lot (It helped that I did a lot this year) and everything had a 'teamwork' 'workflow' 'synergy' 'other BS catchphrase' slant to it (my company loves catchphrases)
 
I'd be detailed if I actually cared about my current job. They make us rank our selves out of five in several categories. Like being in high school. Score high enough and they give you a raise worth a whole extra $40 a month.

LOL, this is so true it hurts.

I just wrote my self-review. It's more of a 3 page rant detailing why I should be paid more than I am.. LOL. Pretty sad, actually. I asked for 10%.

Yeah, like that will happen.. lol. They'll probably give me 3% and tell me I'm lucky to get that. D:

In all fairness those that think they are grossly underpaid usually couldn't leave a company and find another job at the wages they think they are worth.

Grossly underpaid usually gets rectified if you are worth your shit.

Unfortunately most are lucky to get cost of living increases.

List every single semi-major accomplishment from the previous year. Seriously, don't leave any stone unturned. Those "self appraisals" are HR-speak for doing your boss' job for him/her and making it easier for him/her to write your review.

At my last job, we typically had to submit weekly status reports. I'd comb through all of those and cut and paste the highlights into my review. It is a little harder at my current job, but what I do is look at my objectives from the year before and then just list specific instances of how I satisfied them.
 
Last year I did my own, it was rather terrible, shit happened never had my like sit down review with my boss, some how still got a 5000 dollar raise.
 
my former employer required annual self-appraisals - plenty of multiple choice 1-5 with "list 3 things you do well and 3 things that need improvement, plus what you plan to do about them."

if your self-appraisal was anything less than spectacular, you got completely screwed. too many 4's instead of 5's and WHAMMO! - no raise, no promotion.
 
Mine this year is going to be:

"Sat at my desk and surfed ATOT for 8 hours a day, every day for the last year. I wish you ass-clowns would give me something to do before I go postal and kill every one of you bastards.

P.S. Please consider me for a raise."
 
nothing but glowing self appraisals from me. and yes i will copy them from last year's and apply to this year's projects.
