Filling out applications to rent an APT

I get kinda nervous when the applications ask for my personal bank and credit information. They want the account #s to my bank accounts and credit cards...should i be nervous?

Hmm...I've never had to put bank or credit card account numbers on applications. I suppose it probably depends on where you live though.

no, they're just doing that to make sure that you won't squat for 3 months, wait for an evict notice for 3 months, in effect getting 6 months of free rent

Um. They dont need to do that. They ask for SSN which is typical. With your SSN they can already pull credit reports. I'm a college student and then we had to provide income verification (i.e. W2) so I asked my parents for that because they would be paying anyways. Experian credit reports dont require all that junk about CC#s, Bank #s, etc... I think thats a bit suspicious

Ask them why they need the info, and ask for an information disclosure form of some sort. If they're doing credit checks they should have something that explains how/what they do with your info, and how they store it if they do. I filled out an app for an apartment when I was 21 just out of college, never had to put in that info, just references and a deposit for first month and last month rent.

I have rented from 5 different apartments over the past 5 years, and each application had the information on it, but I was not required to fill it out. Either they told me that up front, or I told them I didn't want to release it and they said fine.

Every time I did fill out a credit check and that was all they needed.

Yeah its for a credit check which i dont mind them doing...but asking for my credit card and bank account #'s with the name of the bank gets me feeling abit uneasy

They don't even need your SSN for credit checks. If you're putting down that info, your taking a gamble IMHO. Credit checks can be done with FULL name, last valid address, birthdate etc.

Edit: Please note, I work at a collection agency and run weekly credit check patches on debtors
