Without illegal file sharing, imagine how much smoother the internet would run! Things WOULD be faster... grr.. and games wouldnt lag out and make you die!

The problem isn't filesharing; I think you need to ask yourself why you're staying in a dorm.

At my university, an "off-campus" apartment (about a block from the dorms) costs $1k less than living in a dorm per year, plus I get my own room, and a 3Mbps cable connection; no lag at 2AM.

cant really save living off campus.. its 2900 for the semester (4 months) and that includes food, cable, internet, 300 spending dollars (mcdonalds, laundry, etc), and a local phone line.

AND, its required for freshmen anyways :p

Must be a lot of food. My roomate and I pay (total for both of us) over 4 months: $2460 for rent, $140 for cable, $200 for internet, $90 for phone, $200 for electricity. That gets us a 2bed/1bath 850 sq. ft. apartment with appliances, all other utilities paid. Even if you add spending money, and $100/month for food per person, still comes out a bit lower.

Oh well, there are benefits to dorms (co-eds bouncing around in towels and jellies at 9am every morning:))

The threads entitled "my uni capped filesharing traffic boooooo" outnumber this one 100:1. Maybe you should ask your uni to do the same.

Actually, university connections are monitored less than you would think. Plenty of privacy laws to protect students.

Yeah, that would explain the proliferation of CS/UT/RPG servers out there....on OC-3 lines. ;)

I dont know how much you were joking, I dont play games so I dont know where the servers are and stuff... But they may monitor amount of traffic flowing through, just not content. Its much more complex than that of course...

Mm'kay. :) It's not what you know, it's who you know. ;) Certain students may be allowed access to "uncapped" lines...or certain students that are trusted may be give unrestricted lab access, etc, etc. IOW, rerouting an IP to somebodys room, or even running an additional hard line isn't all that difficult...I've done it. Drop-tile ceilings are a beautiful thing! Ran a 500-foot piece of CAT 5 in about 10 minutes...three guys and a six pack...done!

You mean "get caught, and get your internet priveldges revoked" right?

Like anyone's going to jail for filesharing on a campus network....

Wishful thinking on my part. Circumvention of security devices (and a case can be made that packetshaping/limiting for these filesharing applications can be part of a security plan) is a felony. Depending on how much he is sharing, some of those companies could decide to prosecute Im sure.
