I've been having problems with my Display drive, the screen would give me vertical black lines (but after I reboot everything works fine). Do you think that the problem comes from this file:

125 8 MB \ATI\SUPPORT\wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-071-041026a-018719c\CPanel\DATA2.CAB

What should I do erase these files or what? Are these files corrupted?

I have SP2 installed

The \ATI folder created on your root drive contains temporary files that are decompressed from the installation file downloaded from ATI.com. That folder can be deleted.

It is possible that your download was corrupted, but the installer should have detected a checksum error and failed to run at all.

Don't know what is causing those black lines. I've gotten stuff like that before, and I really can't remember what the causes were. Motherboard incompatibility, dying videocard, loose connection (make sure the videocard is in the slot all the way, with the PC off of course), or maybe just an incompatible driver. Did you recently install anything new like that?

What defrag utility are you using? stock windows XP if so try this.

Go to my computer, right click on the drive letter windows is installed on, click on properties, go to the tools tab, under error checking pick check now, check the box to repair system file errors, then start. You will get a popup window saying it cant be done and do you want to perform check on reboot, choose yes. Then save all work/close open programs and reboot.

After the check is complete and your back in windows try another defrag. If you still have problems reboot into safe mode (before windows starts to load hit f8 several times and you should get a dos screen). From that screen choose safe mode. Once in safe mode perform another defrag. When done reboot and do one more defrag. Fixed? If not download a demo of PerfectDisk 7 and give it a try. If nothing works I'm stumped.
Oh, also try it with your antivirus disabled, seen it a few times.

If you are using another program which one?

shorthorn,

I'm using the normal winXP defragment, but I will try your solution. Do you know anything about these black vertical lines I get when I start windows, according to Jeff7 they could be incompatibility or a loose connection (agp slots) it could be that because I installed the Sliencer ver.3 on my Radeon 9500 pro 3 months ago, could it be the weight of the Sliencer on the Radeon? I'm having these problems with catalyst 4.11 and 4.12beta

About the corrupted files, should I erase them or leave it to the defragmentation.

AMD Athlon XP T-Bred B DLT3C 1700+ @ 2.3GHZ (1.775v) 400FSB = 3200+
Abit NF7-S V.2 (nForce2-U400)
Corsair TwinX XMS 3200LL 512MB @ 2-3-2-6 (2.6v)
Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB

The video corruption and defrag problem may or may not be related. Does the system crash when you get the video garbage? If not it's most likely not related. I would try a different video card either way and see if you have the same problem. A weak PSU can cause video card problems also.

I would not recommend Deleting the files, some are system files, find out the cause first. Xp's defrag program sucks IMO. Try what I stated previously and lets see what happens.

I tried this solution but I still get the same corrupted files, I guess I'll try the safe mode method.
