Files STUCK in windows folder!

Hey Guys,

I have a secondary hard-drive which I use to back up my school and music files. The harddrive is an old primary harddrive, and despite my attempts, I have not been able to remove the entirety of the Windows folder on it. It now contains a bunch of folders named $NtuninstallQ12312313$ (note, the numbers vary, so I simply put in 1-2-3-1-2-3 for demonstrrative purposes). These folders are named in Blue instead of the traditional black font.

Well, unfortunately my backup files got transfered IN to one of those NTUNINSTALL folders, and I can't seem to move them back out, nor can I delete them.

Does anyone know ANY way to recover these files? I don't want to lose three years worth of school files and presentations!

Thanks,

Jacob

That happened to me once before...and I never knew why those folders were in a blue font either!

I was screwed, nonetheless. I think it has to do with the file system setup (NTFS vs. FAT32). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

They are in blue because they are compressed, and I'm sure there's a way to get them out. First you can try to stick in your XP CD, go to the recovery console and try and get them out that way. If it's a FAT32 partition you can use a Win98 startup disk to do it too. What precisely are you doing to try and access them and move them? Any error messages? So which hard disk is this that contains the NtUninstall? This is the one you currently have Windows on? I still have more ideas. With the NTFS file system you can create a junction and access them that way, that's what I had to do when a file was so long I couldn't delete it. I'll tell you how to do that if all else fails.

you just need permission to open the folder

I would think cacls would work although you have to be carefull

or try reversing how you got them in there in the first place
