Files not showing off a CD on this system.

On this one system, when I put some different CD's in the drive some of the files would not get read. I would know the name of the file and search and it wouldnt find it. Then I would check it on a new computer and it was all there. This system is running windows 98 (original edition). I tried switching the CD rom to a brand new one. I also checked windows settings that hide files. This is keeping me from upgrading that computer from a cd. What could be causing this?

If you hadn't switched CD-Drive I would have said the CD-ROM was fussy/broke/old.

I spose there could have been a chance that the new one is also fussy.

I'd be checking the cables and jumpers on the cdroms that aren't reading files, and check the bios to make sure that IDE bus is enabled as well.

I'd also go into Device Manager and delete the cdrom from there (not to worry, it will pop right back up on reboot).

Plus, you might want to go into the registry and find the HKEY_Local_Machine/Enum key and find the cdrom key and delete it there. It, too, will redetect upon reboot. Anything you delete in Enum will redetect (if, in fact, the device exists). Sometimes some corruption and/or old settings can mess up your device operation).

Is DMA checked for the CDROM drive? I just assembled two KK266 mb's and used two identical 40X MagicIO CDROM drives, one in each of them. When loading the VIA 4in1 drivers it asked if I wanted to enable DMA for IDE and I said yes.

On the first system (the wife's) when I attempted to install some software it would only see some of the files and kept reporting a "file not found" error. This concerned me as I had never had any problems with the CDROM drive previously. The CD itself seemed okay because when I used it on my old Abit KT7 system it worked just fine.

I thought perhaps the CDROM drive was bad. However, on the other KK266 system with the same drive type I ran into the exact same problem.

I then went into the CDROM drive properties and unchecked DMA. End of story. Drive now works. Did the same for the wife's system and her drive now works just fine as well.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,

No DMA!, yuck. You will take a performance hit when transfering files if you don't have DMA on, though it can cause problems.

So I have to sacrifice performance for reliability, sounds typical of Windows. This last one sounds right. I'm going to check it out. The others above have already been done. Thanks guys. Ill let you know how it works.

Please be clear: Are ANY files showing up when you explore a cd in the cdrom drive? Or is it just telling you it can't find specific files? Give examples of the exact file types it's not seeing, if it is seeing SOME files.
