Files in folders on archive drive cannot be replaced or modified

I have fought with this problem for weeks, posed it here in a slightly different format earlier and failed to find a solution. It is making life miserable for me as you will see.

I have a relatively new build computer -- couple of months old -- with Windows XP with SP3 installed on the C drive. I have a second drive, D, named Archive on which I primarily store software in a folder named "Software archive". Neither drive is more than 10% full. Both are defraged and scanned for malware by both ESET System Security and by Malwarebytes Antimalware. There is also a Photo archive folder etc. Only four folders in total are on the D drive. A typical entry in the Software archive would be a folder named WordWeb Pro 5.52 which contains the installation software and my license for that software.

Now for the problem. Lets say I download an updated version of the Wordweb software which will typically have the same name as the file already in the folder. The natural thing to do is to drag the new file to the folder and click on move (or copy for that matter) to the folder. Since there is already a file with the same name there, Windows will popup a box asking if I wish to replace the existing file. If I click on yes, the transfer starts and after a bit stops -- transferring that is. The animated graphic continues showing a packet being tossed from one side to the other, but the progress bar never advances and the computer is frozen. I can't get to the task manager with Cntrl/Alt/Del and if I move the mouse cursor into the tool bar at the bottom, it ceases to be the normal arrow cursor and is simply a thin vertical bar. I can only regain control of the computer by doing a hard power down and reboot. This behavior is true for all folders in the master Software archive folder. If on the other hand I first drag the file that is to be replaced to the recycle bin I can then move (or copy) the new file to the folder. Any attempt to replace or alter a file in a folder freezes the computer. To continue to use the example of Wordweb, if a new version became available with the same name as the one I had archived, I could only store the new one by first dragging the old one to the recycle bin etc.

I have been using the work around described here -- or creating an entirely new folder (with a different name of course) in the Software archive and then deleting the old folder. You can see why I say this is making life miserable. I have other machines I use in a similiar way and none of them exhibit this behavior.

Any one have any ideas or suggestions?

Here are a few things to check.

I would check the Drive Properties for Sharing, Quota management, or if Compression is enabled.

Depending on how you set up the System during installation, you may not have full Rights to the Drive. I know there is an option to make a User account files "Private" or something like that - this could be causing problems.

Check file properties to see if they're restricted, Archive only, etc. - this is probably a long shot.

You don't say if the Drive is SATA or PATA (IDE).
If it's PATA I'd double check the Drive jumper to make sure it's set for Master/Slave as needed, and avoid the Cable Select option.
Also check the Drive properties settings in the Device Manager. Here you're looking for DMA or a variant, you don't want PIO.

Make sure you have whatever Chipset Drivers you need for your Motherboard.

Check your BIOS settings for your Drives.

Those would be the areas I'd start with. There are probably more, but they aren't coming to mind right off.

Thanks for the reply. Both hardrives are IDE and NTFS formatted -- each is set to master on its own cable. No compression. I never compress drives -- just buy bigger drives. Set to do not share, with the following security settings checked: full control, modify, read&execute, list folder contents and write. Only special permissions is unchecked. I am administrator with full rights and there are no other users. No quoto management. So far as I can tell this is the plain vanilla set of settings I have used on other drives. Both drives are running Ultra DMA-5

I can copy a folder and all of its subfolders to the drive OK. The problem only occurs when I am either trying to replace or modify an existing file. All folders are marked read only which was what I thought might be the problem in my old post here, but one of the members pointed out that this was universally true for Windows XP -- which I then verified on this machine and a couple of others in the lab. There is something about making a change to an existing file that causes the problem.
