Files corrupt then suddenly not corrupt in w2k?

I've had numerous problems with my machine in the past couple of weeks and I've been unable to determine what is causing them. I've checked the HDD (ibm 60gxp 40gb) with the fitness test program from their website, and it comes out OK. A week ago my user profile got corrupt so I reformatted. After installing service pack 2 it told me "Drive C is corrupt, run CHKDSK", so I did, and there were a couple of errors that it fixed. I have the machine reboot while starting programs before (the event viewing said it was a 'bugcheck').

Perhaps the most telling clues are what is happening recently. I have a program which is archived into 30 files. I have the .sfv file for them. One of the 30 files came up as corrupt. I checked on the server (I am admin on it) and it was not corrupt there. I deleted it, and re-downloaded it. Still came up as corrupt on my machine. I also noticed randomly some of the other 30 files would come up as corrupt, then I'd close some directories, open them back up, and suddenly they aren't corrupt anymore. I downloaded the one file that kept on coming up as corrupt to the other HD partition, and it came up as Good. I attempted to copy it over to the directory with the other 30 files, and suddenly its corrupt.

I have Norton AntiVirus 2002 with the most recent updated definitions. I've scanned the entire disk. I've posted with this problem before, and usually I don't get many responses... but that was before that list bit of strangeness happened with the 30 files.

If someone knows whats going on here, PLEASE let me know. It's driving me INSANE. PLUS -- this computer worked perfectly for 3 months and seemingly without reason began doing this... without hardware or software change...

Thanks for any tips given.

hello.
I got a similar problem last time. sometimes when I boot, win2K said inaccessible boot devices, file corrupted, etc. I re-installed win2K several times but the problem remain. Then I found out that the problem was my IDE cable was faulty.
try to use another cable and see if the problrm go away.

Think about all of the pieces of the harddisk subsystem. Definitely go through with the cable check as the previous person posted. If your harddisk seems to be OK in itself, then that can be ruled out. Don't forget about the controller though. If you have a separate controller make sure the contacts are clean. Update your controller's drivers to the latest ones. Get the latest drivers for your chipset, etc.

Update: I checked the cables, they are good. I unplugged them and plugged them back in. I've had my computer off for the past couple hours. Now it has spontaniously rebooted 3 times in a row. I even moved my memory chips into different slots. I updated my motherboard chipset (i815e) a couple days ago. What could it be? The HD checked without errors using the extensive fitness disk check from ibm's site. Any more ideas?? This is freaking me out.. have no idea what else to do.

COuld also be PSU or memory chips. If you have more than 1 memory "stick", get ride of them and try 1 at a time. Then, try switching in a better power supply (steal one from somewhere).

Further update: Now Interet Explorer is crashing on specific pages, then I reboot and some pages work and others don't. Outlook Express bombed a couple times too. Clearly something is majorly screwed. This has been going on for a week or so, and calmed down a bit after I formatted and now is slowly building to an unusable PC (and this is new 🙁 ). I guess it could be the memory sticks, I'll take out one and the other and see if I continue to have problems (since I have 2).

Can someone recommend a good free PC hardware diagnostic program to check all these things? I've not been able to do anything and these problems are really making me sick.. It is driving me to the point of insanity to not be able to know what is causing this..

YES!! I have discovered the problem, so I figured I'd share with all:

Last two weeks have been hell with all these random problems - random file corruption, spontanious reboots etc. It turns out (after I ran a memory diagnostic program) that one of my 256 Micron CAS2 SDRAM sticks I had ordered from isquared.com was bad. According to this program, it had thousands and thousands of errors. I guess it worked fine for 3 months but something triggered it to go bad, and somehow I am very GLAD I finally know what it is. Now I can just replace it and hopefully won't get another bad stick anytime in the future.. it really sucks to get those..
