File Transfer without a server

Greetings All,

I wanted to send my Brother a few large files (100 MB +) without hosting the files, and I was wondering what the best way to do it via computer to computer. Is there a file sharing program within windows, or another 3rd party one?

Thanks guys,

Rakewell

Nice and easy FTP server and client is Filezilla. Free and pretty intuitive. You can certainly use XP's FTP server via IIS. Filezilla is a better choice IMO and relatively small download and install.

Another vote for FTP. I've used IM programs in the past with some success - they are straightforward to use, and usually work fine - but a few large transfers falling over at 99%, and the lack of a resume function can prove annoying.

I now run an FTP server (Bulletproof FTP) for when I need to move anything more than a few megs, and I wouldn't use any other method now. Now transfers are resumable, I don't have to babysit the transfer - if it fails, the recipient can resume the download without any intervention from me, I can control their upload speed if necessary and have found FTP transfers are often much faster than IM transfers. Setting up an FTP isn't that involved and is definitely worth the time you'll save in the long run if you intend to transfer anything more than a couple of files 🙂

A very nice application I must say.

THanks for the replies, guys. I really appreciate your help.

Filezilla sounds good... Forgive the N00B Question, but it's a program that both my system and my brothers system must be running at the same time in order to transfer files, right? And I just enter his address or him my address in order to access each other files?

Thanks again.

You only need to run the FTP server on the system you want to use as a file server. From the other machine you can use a FTP client (flashfxp) or use Internet explorer to connect to the ftp server. i.e. type in IE = ftp:\\login:'password@123.456.789:411

convention: login : Password @ IP: Port #

Download from the FileZilla site both the client and the server versions.

Install on your computer the server version set a default serving file directory and to put the files that you want to transfer in the Directory.

If your brother has any FTP client program he can use it, otherwise tell him to download and install the FileZilla FTP client program.

On your computer, you have to open Ports 20-21 through the Firewall, and or Router.

Log to http://www.whatismyip.com to find your external IP. Email the external IP number to your brother. Make sure that your FTP server is running.

Your brother should start is FTP program and enter your external IP as the server address. If every thing set correctly, his ftp program would connect to your ftp server and he would be able to download the files.

The above is the general principle you should read the programs instructions to set every thing correctly.

If you would like to set a system with more a capacity to always when needed to be connect to this page might help, Connecting to a Computer/Server/Network through the Internet

If you prefer using the Ultr@VNC method that was mentioned in few posts above this might help as well, Ultr@VNC (Remote Control for your Network/Internet) - Installation, and Settings

:sun:

P.S. You need to set such an arrangement only one time and it can server well in the future.
If your brother needs to transfer file to you, the same arrangement cab be used he can use the FTP client to upload the files to your FTP server.

Thanks Jack, and everybody.

We got it up and running, and the file transfers are running smoothly; FileZillas a great program. You guys rule.

Cheers,

Rakewell
