File Too Big.

Is there a trick to getting file size down for a graphic to be used in a web page? I tried the compressing routines in my graphics software but I can't seem to get the file down small enough without losing quality big time. Any programs that are especially good at crunching graphics files? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try doing it with Adobe Photoshop 5.5/6.0 or Macromedia Fireworks (a free trial version can be downloaded at macromedia's site, I think). Both provide you with options to preview different levels of image size/quality truncation especially for the web.

Can you explain what format the orignal graphic is in?

Then what format were you trying to convert it too?


This is too much to explain on a message board, however i will say--resizing the graphic is another way to make the file size smaller along with changing formats...

JPEG for detailed pictures, and GIF is for basic images...

There are hundreds of books on this subject, you won't have trouble finding a few at the book store, or library...

ah, the age old question "How can i get my pictures smaller..."

I agree with what theneuromancer says. use fireworks or photoshop->save for web.
thats the best way to keep it down.

Oh you mean 10meg .tiff's are unacceptable for a web page?

The original image is a BMP that is about half a meg. I can get it down to a 20K JPEG easily but after that I start to lose noticeable quality. I know that's a lot of compression already, but I need it smaller. Thanks for the input. I'm using Photo Impact by the way.

What's the size of your picture in pixels? Have you lowered the resolution to 72 dpi?

what kind of picture is it? bmp files tend to be large in size. if the graphic is not to color gradient heavy i would suggest a .gif format. if its got lots of color gradient, i would recommend a .jpg format. save it as a resoltion of at least 72 dpi. you shouldnt need more than 150 dpi for web viewing tho.
