I have a laptop and a desktop and a server. I can NOT share files between them all, unless I go to the ADMIN group and add guest to it. Then I have free reign to delete/share/etc.

All 3 systems use XP PRO SP3.
2 LAN, 1 wireless.
all 3 log in names are the same.

But without adding guest to the admin group, I cannot do a thing. it usually says network permission denied.

thoughts?

Adding Guest to the Admin group is a bad idea. Don't do it.

How is your share setup? Lets say you create a share on machine1 and call it Files. You should give the Everyone group edit rights (you can get more granular but this is good enough) on the share and give the network account Edit NTFS permissions on the shares folder. Then map a network drive from machine2 to \\machine1\Files (may need to use ip address instead of name) and connect using the network account username/password.

That is what I do KB--give correct permissions and all.

This is not the first time I have set this up, and its usually been strait forward, but now its just crapped out! I want to says its SP3, because I have nothing else to blame...

I only add the guest to the admin group when I NEED to transfer files, then I removed it.

Have you tried changing the password on the guest account? I had a couple computers a while back that didn't want to share until I changed the guest password.

Since you don't have the ability to change the guest password by default the command "net user guest password" will let you change the password after enabling the guest account.

\\server is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrators of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access denied.

That is what I get still :/

I just realized that the other share tab was different on my server, yet both are running XP Pro SP3....

The one that I can access has options for permissions (this is my desktop), and my 'server' does not have those options at all! Why would that be?

turning OFF simple file sharing allowed me to set the permissions all the two systems, all is good now!
