I'm trying to set up file sharing within my network. I can't seem to get it to work right. This is a conversation I had explaining my problem.

[19:18] MagiAce: we're having problems getting file sharing to wokr
[19:18] Josh H: between each other
[19:18] MagiAce: yeah
[19:18] Josh H: or online?
[19:18] MagiAce: within the network
[19:18] Josh H: wired or wireless?
[19:18] MagiAce: all the computers were added to the same network
[19:18] MagiAce: 2 wired, 2 wireless
[19:18] Josh H: k
[19:18] Josh H: #1. make sure they are all on the same workgroup
[19:18] MagiAce: i've never had this problem before
[19:19] MagiAce: yeah they are all on MSHOME
[19:19] Josh H: #2. assign static IP addresses to ALL computers
[19:19] MagiAce: ok hang on
[19:19] MagiAce: in the router
[19:19] MagiAce: i assigned each computer an IP
[19:19] Josh H: #3. Set up user accounts on each computer for each person
[19:19] MagiAce: what do you mean?
[19:19] Josh H: #4. Map each persons drive
[19:20] Josh H: go into control panel
[19:20] Josh H: set up a new acct for each computer to log into
[19:20] MagiAce: i see
[19:20] MagiAce: but wait
[19:20] MagiAce: listen to this
[19:20] MagiAce: on my desktop(wired)
[19:20] MagiAce: i can "see" all the computers in the workgorup
[19:20] MagiAce: i can't access the wireless ones
[19:20] MagiAce: but i can access the other wired one
[19:20] Josh H: they MSHOME too?
[19:20] MagiAce: yeah
[19:21] MagiAce: my laptop
[19:21] Josh H: hmmm
[19:21] MagiAce: wireless
[19:21] Josh H: weird
[19:21] MagiAce: can't access the workgroup
[19:21] MagiAce: at all
[19:21] Josh H: can you ping em?
[19:21] MagiAce: yet the desktop can see the laptop on it
[19:21] MagiAce: just do ping 192.159.x.x?
[19:21] Josh H: yea
[19:21] MagiAce: yeah i can ping it
[19:22] Josh H: can you ping from the laptop?
[19:22] MagiAce: yep
[19:22] Josh H: hmmmmm
[19:22] Josh H: i dunno :)
[19:22] MagiAce: when i go into networks
[19:22] MagiAce: and click on mshome
[19:22] MagiAce: on the laptop
[19:22] Josh H: it crashes explorer?
[19:22] MagiAce: i says i cannot access, i may not have permission
[19:22] Josh H: hmmmmm
[19:22] Josh H: i really dont know off the top of my head
[19:23] Josh H: sorry :(

Would really appreciate help on this. What may be causing this problem?

On my network I only use mapping. Right click on My Computer/Map Network Drive. Type //[the other PC IP]/[the share name] and then click different username and type in the user name and password from the other computer.

Seems i can access the desktops networked drive if i manually type it in, but i doesn't show up as a network place.

My desktop on the other hand, cannot access the laptop at all. When i view the mshome workgroup it shows laptop, when i click on it i'm told I cannot access it. When i type it in manually it doesn't even find it.

I would restart samba on the laptop, /etc/init.d/samba restart...

but I only know to do that because you gave us all the information.
