File Sharing, not the typical problem

Ok I have a win2k, and I can't share a folder. I used to be able to, so I know what needs to get done: Setup an account, have all the correct protocols/Services/Clients (TCP/IP, Microsoft Networking, File Sharing), and then share the folder. In fact I used to have a win2k that I shared, so I think I know the basics of how to get it done. But recently I changed computers, upgraded, and I did all the setting up I thought I needed to do, that is creating accounts, so on so forth. But now I can't share the folders/files.

I can see the win2k folder from the other computers, but it says:
"Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied."

I don't get it.

I tried using the win98 systems, logging in as myself, which gives me administrator privilege and that worked. So it isn't the lack of abilities between the computers (and protocols)

I have the other users (2 others right now) without any passwords. They are in the users group and I gave them both Read and Change permissions. Does anybody have any idea what it might be.

Ok....there is one thing that I've never been too sure of. When you add a user to the permissions of your folder, and it adds the permission as //Host-Computer/User1, does that mean if User1 logs on to your computer they can use the file, but if they logon with there own computer, even if it is the same logon and password, they can't...Does that mean when I set the permission for the files, I have to go on the network and find the user I want to grant permission to?

I might have answered my own questions, but please please please help...I've posted other questions before and people seem to shun my problems 🙁

EDIT:
The oddest thing, I tried sharing another folder, not messing with the default share properties this time, which happens to be Everyone given full control. And I tried that folder and it could be shared. So I changed the settings on my original folder to share with those permissions, but it still didn't work.

Why do you people hate me...?

Anyway I still don't know what's wrong...but here's more information. The difference between the first time I shared files and now, is that now I am formatted NTFS. So there is a new tab called Security that I didn't have to deal with.

So what I did was, I added everyone in the permissions->security tab as well. So everyone had basically read, and browse abilities, and that worked. But the odd thing for me is that I don't have to do anything with the security tab for the other folders I am sharing, just this one.

So even though messing with the security tab "solved" it, I still didn't have to do that for other folders, just this one.

Please help somebody.

1.) SP2 installed?

2.) Any security templates applied in the MMC? Any changes made the Local Security Policiy?

3.) Here is what MS says -- Error Message: Access to the specified device, path or file is denied. User Action: Ask the network administrator to set the permissions on this device or file, or on the directories in the path to the device or file, to allow you access. hehe, one of those "You are an idiot, so why are you trying to do things that your expert network administrator should be doing? I mean come on, who is the MCSE here?"

4.) Search button at the top brought up this lovely guide, C/O JackMDS:

Sharing:
Assuming that your hardware is functioning, and you are using the correct type of CAT5 cables.

All computers can have one, two, or three, of the following Network Protocols:

1. TCP/IP - must be installed for Internet
2. NetBEUI ? simple, no IP scheme, Internet safe (recommended as Default Protocol).
3. IPX/PX ? needed for some LAN games.

The three can reside together BUT - All computers must have the same Default Protocol..

All used Protocols are bound to the Ethernet Card.

All computers have the same Workgroup name.

Each computer has it own unique name.

Read this for Win 2000: Sharing Files/Printers between WinNT/Win2K

And this for Win98

Sharing setting in Win98!!!

You will not see a Computer in the Network Neighborhood, unless it shares something.

Make sure that you Logon as Client for Microsoft Network.

There are three places to be checked for sharing:

The first two are in Control Panel, Network.

1. The Protocol that you are using for sharing, has to be bound to Client for Microsoft Network, and Sharing is Checked in the protocol's properties menu.

2. The general File and Print Sharing has to be installed, and checked.

The third in "My Computer" folder.

3. Individual Drive or/and printer has to be checked for sharing.
Right click on the device to share, choose properties, click on the sharing Tab, check Shared As, and give it a name.

For printer:

Click My Computer, click on Printers, right click on the printer that you want to share, click on Properties, choose the Sharing tab, checked share, give it a name.

Important: The Shared Printer Drivers has to be installed on all computers that use this printer.

Good luck!

Thanks, but all those things I've already done.

But I think I've figured out one difference. When you are formatted NTFS, you have another security option, that is separate from the permissions options. I don't know what the purpose for the difference is yet, but I just added all the users I wanted to have permissions for the specific folder to the security tab, and it worked...so either you have to set all the users you want in the permissions tab AND in the securities tab, or at least in the security tab.

Yeah I've looked at all the posts in the past already, when i set it up for the first time, but it seems that the guides people wrote up was for FAT32 setups, and not really touching on all the other little options/problems/features NTFS brings to the table. I think I've figured it out though.

Thanks for at least posting a response, instead of just assuming I made some stupid-a$$ error, that amounted to having my computer not plugged in. As far as I can tell there has been little to no posts about the security tab that is in NTFS 'mode' and not in 'FAT32' mode.
