Hello,

I was able to share files up from my desktop to my laptop up to about a 3 weeks ago and now suddenly I cannot see the shared folders on my desktop (running WinXP Pro) from my laptop (running WinXP Home). The only things that have changed were some Windows updates were installed & I changed my WRT54G firmware to DD-WRT. Could these be the culprits???

When I try to share a folder on my desktop, I get the following message:
An error occurred while trying to share "folder". The server service is not started. The shared resource was not created at this time.

I went into the control panel and to administrative tools/services and under Server - I tried to start the service and get the following error:
Could not start the server service on local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

When I right click on server it shows this path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Here are the updates I installed recently:
Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2008 (KB890830) Wednesday, February 13, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB946026) Wednesday, February 13, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB944533) Wednesday, February 13, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB943055) Wednesday, February 13, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366) Sunday, February 10, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) Thursday, February 07, 2008 Windows Update

Right now I can see the laptop files I am sharing from my desktop, but not vice versa.....also I cannot print from my laptop thru a shared printer connected thru my desktop....

I do not know if this is a coincidence or if they may have affected the file sharing. This is really annoying.....Can someone please help me!!!!!
I run AVG AntiVirus (No Viruses), Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot S&D, CCleaner and also do not know if any of these maybe removed something.

The server service should start automatically on reboot.

The only other thing I can suggest is to try unchecking simple file sharing in your file/folder options.

There is probably some DLL and other system files that got corrupted.
Try to refresh your Win XP Installation.

Boot from the XP original CD. Skip the first screen that offer Console Repair, and continue as though you install a New XP.

After you Agree etc., the new install screen will come on and would detect the current XP installation.

You would have an option to Press R for Repair.

Use it, would take about 45Min. and you would have a Refresh Installation of XP while keeping all your data and XP configuration.

P.S. If you made changes to WinXP Security setting (Like Firewall special permission) you have to look over them after the refresh since they might revert to the Default.

These error messages are in the viewer:

Error 2/28/2008 2:00:07 Service Control Manager 7023
Error 2/28/2008 2:05:55 Service Control Manager 7001
Error 2/13/2008 2:10:07 MrxSmb 8003

The first error is in there very frequently.
The second error is in there on about 5 separate occasions.

I need to figure to get the server service started....Every time I try I get an error....

I did try the 2 fixes and they did not work. I did get it resolved by doing a System Restore to an earlier date before I had these problems....No Errors in Event Viewer now......Thanks to ALL!!!!!!
