Hey,

Ok heres a new question.

Got a cable connection installed. IP's are no longer static.

The workgroup/file sharing no longer works. I don't have the option of using a static ip. (The lease would expire then I would have to change it again). Does anyone no some soloutions to this problem?

Using XP PRO.. and WIN 98 boxes

I have about 2 gigs worth of mp3s and program files to copy..

It would take hours over my ftp server..

Help!

Are you talking about filesharing over the WAN or the LAN?
Do you have a router?

Where are you getting the IP addresses from? If you are getting them from your cable company, than each of your boxes is getting an IP that works on your cable companies network for internet access. This will prevent you from doing any local file sharing between your boxes.

However, if this is the case, you have a couple of options.

Easy option #1) You can put another NIC in each of your machines and assign those cards a local LAN static IP address. Each machine will have two NICs and two connections into your hub, one for the internet and one for LAN access.

Easy Option #2) The other option that I can think of is to purchase an inexpensive Cable router (I recommend the Linksys brand with a build in switch) that will act as a gateway for your computers. The router will get a DHCP address from your cable company. Your router will serve as a DHCP server for your LAN machines and then handle passing packets meant for the internet to your ISP, and pass LAN packets between your computers.

I would personally choose option 2 because I don't like having mulitple NICs in machines just for LAN/internet access.

I would recommend one of the 4 or 8 port BEFR series from Linksys. They have an integrated switch, which will yield much greater bandwidth than your hub for your file sharing. You should be able to pick one up for around $40.00.
