I have a linksys BEFW11s4 router and one desktop running XP home wired to it and a laptop running XP home connected wireless;y. Both computers can access the internet fine. THey cannot however share files or share printers. When i try to share files and i look for the other computer it doesn't show up. BOthe computers can ping the router but cannot ping the other computer.
ANy ideas
thanks
Big AL

if they cannot ping one another, turn off Or even better UNINSTALL all your firwalls.

cause ur router is a firewall there is no need for software firewalls.

Also may be the usual TCP/IP now you see it now you don't connection. They're connected all right but you can't tell and can't access. Check out Jack's Site and look at the instructions there, pretty clear and easy to do.

Firewalls may be the problem but using NetBEUI to share won't keep re-occurring.

I've unistalled all firewalls and used NetBEUI with no success. I've read up alot about this andit seems i have tried everything. I am almost ready to call in the GeekSquad from Bestbuy.

hey i actually work for geeksquad.. 😉

make sure you are pinging both computers correctly.. if they can ping the router (gateway IP address), i cant see why they wouldnt ping each other. usually that means ICMP is turned off but i dont believe linksys routers have that functionality, on the LAN side anyways.

on the network side, i know from experience that a lot of times the network wizard will get the windows machines to connect and share resources.

make sure you run the winsock2 fix as well.. probably wont fix your connectivity problem as you get the internet fine, but it will be nice to have a clean stack.

good luck

p.s. -- norton antivirus 2005s internet worm block is actually a firewall.. try turning that off as well.

Hey bigal40. Did you get your network to do the file/printer sharing? I know you said you did unintall all firewalls (like I did) but I found that if Win XP firewall is enabled you won't be able to file share. I don't like the idea of not having a software firewall but at least my D-Link wireless router has a firewall.

Good luck and hope you got everything settled.

Yeah, I have disabled winodws firewall. I think I'm gonna call geeksquad next week because i am stumped. Anyone know how much they would charge

Yeah but does that model of Router have its own firewall? The Linksys I have has its own plus the Trend Micro Anti-virus also runs one.

Once all Firewalls are shut down then run the network wizard from your host PC--I'd guess would be your desktop. Make sure computers are on,computers are connected to the internet, printer is on and let the wizard do its thing. It'll work when all is connected correctly.

Geek Squad prices are on their website $100+ to have them come out and look at the network I believe when I looked the other day.

Have you tried resetting the router with the manual reset switch by chance?

I had a similar problem last night, where one PC could see the files on the other, but not vice-versa. One PC was using DHCP from the router and the other had a static IP address. I changed the static PC to use DHCP and boom, everything worked perfect.
