File renamers?

Our growing MP3 collection has grown from a patchwork of different sources and ripping programs over time, and as a result is an organizational mess. Some songs start with artist name, some with track name, etc. I started renaming things manually but it's going to take forever that way.

I searched for "file renamers", but there appear to be a billion or so different programs that do this. Can anyone recommend a good, free, stable, malware-free program that does a good job of mass renaming?

TIA.

I like mp3tag, but it really depends on how disorganized your files are currently. It allows you to convert the tags to the filename and the filename to the tags.

The one that comes with ACDSee works great for me.
It can do whole hard drives at a time and has some pretty advanced formulas if you want to use them.

I wrote one a long time ago since back then, the freeware scene really wasn't as good, but it was never coded to handle id3. I also wanted to modify it to work in a sort of regex manner... hmm maybe I'll do that sometime!
