File Open Error!! help!

fresh system reload on a Gateway Astro w/win98. every time i boot up, i get to the desktop and a "File Open Error" hits the screen. it says "Spec Check File not found ---> C:\CHKSYS.TXT" what is this and how do i remedy it? thankz

not sure what it is, but with win98 you can go to the start menu..then run..then type "msconfig"...then go to the "startup" tab, find the reference to that .txt file during bootup, uncheck it, and it won't bother you anymore!

hey jeff, how do i find in msconfig where that .txt file is referenced? i have searched around a bit, but not found any reference to it.

who is jeff?

ummm..do you have a LOT of stuff listed in msconfig?

have you looked at your C: drive and seen if you can find that .txt file?

sorry sohcrates

i glanced at "jeff lebowski" in your signature as i was hitting the reply button and didn't stop to think that it was part of your sig.

no, not too much in msconfig, but no specific ref to this file.

the file is not anywhere to be seen on the c: drive, or on the windows 98 disk.

i have reformatted 3 times and get the same error every time. the hdd have been replaced twice, too. i'm at a loss and nobody at gateway tech support knew the answer.
