i have a bunch of files that were encrypted and backed up for a reformat that i need. now it wont give me access to them. is there a way to resore default permission settings to files with some program ro somethin? IMPORTANT

No. Say goodbye to your files. In the future, you might want to follow the procedure outlined in the Encryption Key backup FAQ here at anandtech.

Unfortunitly your files are probably lost. Unless you backed up the encryption key when you reinstalled, there is no way to decrypt those files. Sorry 🙁

thats pretty gay..

Sorry but you shouldn't really be using security features if you don't understand how they work. It would be more gay if it was possible to get them back, because then it would be possible for anyone to circumvent the encryption and make it pointless.

um.. calling me stupid doesnt '"hurt my feelings" first off cuz i dont have any (mild depression) and second off .. whats a 1.4 gpa tell ya?

second off .. whats a 1.4 gpa tell ya?

Tells me you're good at taking tests =) My manager is a CCA but couldn't setup Citrix if his job depended on it.

Which is more gay

A) you can't decrypt your files because you didn't save the encryption key
or
B) Anyone can decrypt your files because MS used a common encryption key (say every Win2K Admin account had the same key).

I would say B easily, because it means the encryption is basically pointless.

finally, some reason. ok i got the name of the key, where it says who has ownership of the file (s) but no key.. what do u suggest i do?

Take the encryption key you backed up before formatting and restore it according to the instructions in the FAQ.

BTW, isnt a 1.4gpa really LOW? With the way you spell I dont think you could be all that intelligent.

...iiiii doooont haaaave aaaaa keeeeey. and yes it is very low, i said it so u ppl know that insulting my intelegencec doesnt work, im at rock bottom

So sorry about your bad luck. Id either start replacing what you just lost, or start studying so you can get a job at the NSA, they should be able to crack it.
