File Download Prompt

Whenever I click on a .mpg or .mpeg file online, I'm now getting a file download box, asking me to either open or save the clip. If I click "open" it sends it to my Temporary Folder before Windows Media Player plays it. It never used to do this. Normally, I click on a clip and MP instantly starts playing the clip with no prompting.

Not positive, but I think this started when I recently installed WinDVD 6. After installing it, I went into my file types and changed it so Media Player was the default player for .mpg and .mpeg files. But for some reason, I'm getting the stupid prompt. I checked my internet and media player settings but I can't pinpoint the issue. And no, just unchecking the box for "do not display this message again" doesn't rid the problem.

Anyone know what's up and how to just go straight to buffering/playing without having to click on open or save first?

My XP pro installation never did that. Then again, it rendered .wmvs as .txt files. (something I still haven't solved)

I installed XP home temporarily, and I get the same prompt. No clue why.

My new hard drive arrived, so I'm busy cloning my XP pro install since my old drive is dying

Anyone? If it had always done this, I wouldn't find it annoying. I've been using XP Pro the whole time too, both when the problem didn't exist and now that it does. And as I said, installing WinDVD is the only thing I can think of that I did around the time the problem started. Can't really see how that would create this issue but not sure. All I know is it's highly annoying having to manually open/save the files before they'll play. I figured it was just an internet setting but I looked through all of them and didn't notice that anything when from "enable" to "prompt."

From my limited knowledge it depends how the video is stored on the site you are downloading from. If it supports streaming it will Stream, if not, you have to save it.

Yeah but some of these files are ones I played before without getting the prompt. I'm almost positive it's something directly on my end that's caused the change. I've NEVER clicked on a .mpg/.mpeg that didn't automatically buffer/play on MP until this problem began. Not saying that it doesn't happen but for me personally, it has never been an issue until recently.

That sounds like a problem with the server not having the correct MIME type. If the WMV is being sent to you as text/html, then Firefox will try to render it as text.

That sounds like a problem with the server not having the correct MIME type. If the WMV is being sent to you as text/html, then Firefox will try to render it as text.

It only happens in IE. I use Opera (which opens it correctly), as does FF

IE does it correctly if the movie is embedded, but if it's a clickable link, it's text only.

dang, i have a friend who told me he can't open .wmv files because they open as text but thought he was on crack...

Hmm.. That's strange. I thought IE would just follow the file extension and opens the file based on that. I guess I was wrong.

no, but he doesn't know quite as much about PCs as I do and I haven't gotten a chance to see what was going on.
